My question would be did they HAVE to remove them?

I love some nice mature trees and advocate to protect them. At first glance looking at those they do look a bit large and overgrown for the space they occupied blocking a lot of natural light from some of those units. My questions are did they all need to go? Is there opportunity to prune these type of trees back? Was there concern with their encroachment on those overhead lines?

I was just in the Netherlands. They had lots of interesting pruned trees which I didnt really think to take many pics of. But on a few occassions I noted they didnt fully cut down trees but left some of the tree up and I liked it.

I was walking around late last night and took some photos at ground level. The last one is the Leston acquisition across the street, with redone balconies and a new sign out front.

102 Ave with trees, bike lane and 2 Mercury Block buildings feels cool.
Jasper Ave with no trees, a bunch of car lanes, and a big empty lot feels much less cool
