Edmonton Companies News & Discussion

All I know is that after LaSalle took over ECC they lost The Bay, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, GYMVMNT, Coles, Starbucks, SoftMoc, McDonalds, Thai Express, Fatburger, Bentley and lord knows how many other retailers, leaving a half-dead mall that's been this way for several years now. That's why I question their competency and reputation.

Unless you have inside knowledge, to say that the management group and/or owner is incompetent or disreputable shows a lack of understanding of what may be going on behind the scenes. Maybe the investor doesn't want to pour money into the mall because of financial issues not related to the mall, maybe they're working on a plan to demolish portions of the mall and so won't do long-term leases. Even leases with termination clauses could be costly for the owner down the road. Maybe they have big plans that can only be acted upon once many many things fall into place.

For the record, I have no inside knowledge.

TLDR; not knowing what's going on behind the veil does not necessarily mean it's a crap show back there. It could be a crap show, but without firm evidence....
It probably has more to do with a preference for a more visible street front location, rather than about the owners of the mall. Although suburban malls are popular here, not every retail business wants to be in an indoor mall.

I think COVID shutting down downtown for over two years probably had a lot more to do with it. The mall has been steadily losing tenants for several years before they took over and were madly shuffling around some of the remaining ones because of moving the food area and replacing the lower level with parking, which must have been very annoying and disruptive for them. They inherited a mess from the previous owners.

I dont know to pretend to know what “seeds” or what “rounds” of raising capital means…..as in who is giving these companies free money? Is that what this means? Or is it a loan? Either way…..I thought YYC was the tech darling of the Universe? I guess we’re holding our own with REAL tech and not some make believe Call Centers disguised as “Fintech”…..lol.

Good to see an Edmonton based company doing well in Canada and internationally with Green and Gold PCL signage at Montreals new Aéroport métropolitain de Montréal. Porter will be the largest airline based out of here but not the only one.

This is good to see. Despite the stereotype of Edmonton not being a business center for larger companies, we actually do have some good size, very successful ones.

Of course no mention of Edmonton on the signage here or anything, so someone going by may have no idea of this, but that's how we often are, low key about our success.
