Edmonton Companies News & Discussion

Well apparently YEG has been identified as one of 5 potential “hubs” as per the article. Surprisingly Glubish states that each “data center wil support 250-300 jobs” - that stat I presume is a bit premature to state.

I doubt they’ll set up data centres smack Downtown (that’s not something we’d want either). These are massive power-hungry warehouses, and they’re probably gonna be set up in places like Nisku and Acheson. However, I would love to see the city lobby to place some of the new data centres in Blatchford. There are large parcels of land there slated for commercial development and data centres could help to quickly fill up the neighborhood. Plus, the heat from those servers could power the district heating system. And there would be plenty of tech yuppies fitting right in with Blatchford’s demographics.
You want a data Center to built in Blatchford? Think Amazon warehouse on 41st Ave as a reference….you sure about that wish?

I think it would be a great way to develop the massive amounts of land there. It’ll bring tech jobs adjacent to NAIT and attract more residents to the area, with others being able to easily access those jobs by car (Yellowhead Freeway) or LRT (Metro Line). Plus, it’ll significantly contribute back to the district heating system and reduce home heating emissions. That area also falls within the Tech and Innovation corridor established by the city that runs along the Metro Line.

I suppose the data centres idea is less hare brained than the one the UCP had a few years ago to try attract a lot of bitcoin mining with our not so cheap electricity, but I feel this will be like that one - some initial flash, with little actually happening. It seems to be how this government operates.

More YEG Biopharma dominance…..

Great news. I am assuming this will replace their existing warehouse on 170 street.
Probably not going to happen but I would love to see the Brick move out of its current 107 Ave/101 St store (the original) and into a new flagship location a few blocks south. Maybe as an anchor tenant in a revamped CCM west redevelopment - they could take up a good chunk of the old Bay store. And while they are at it, they could move their office staff out of the 170 St warehouse and into some sexy new space downtown. Like I said, not likely to happen but one can dream!!!

This is a relocation of their old HQ and warehouse from 170th St….so I’d say yes - but not certain

This is the Bricks Corporate Headquarters. Leons is still in Ontario. I go by it most days on my way to a project site.

Good thing YYC is the "Fintech" capital of Alberta....let them deal with this crap when this could happen to them......with their darling "start-up - Neo Financial." I hear that a ton of their capital came from Tencent (China) - is this allowed?

I am suspicious because my Neo card has had to be replaced so many times. I am very careful and had few problems with other cards from the big banks.

I do get the sense they are over hyped, but hopefully not anything worse than that. In Canada it is also very hard for financial starts up if they are going up against the big established banks, which remain centered in TO.

But I suppose if all you got is Neo, you hype the heck out of it and hope to use that hype to try build something more substantial.
