Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

Not sure if this has been posted already, I just found out the city is piloting a new secure bike storage facility downtown this summer! As usual it wasn't well advertised, I only found out because I emailed activetransportation@edmonton.ca asking if there were any plans for this. In their reply they said they would start communications for it soon however. It's only open Saturdays, but I imagine that will be expanded if it's well used.

Here is the facility, it's on 102ave just west of Churchill:

This is very exciting to hear! Is it patrolled? How do you access? That area has got to be one of the worst outside of boyle street in terms of loitering and drug use, so I’m definitely not locking up there without great security.

PSA: RiverHawks games have free secure bike parking monitored by a security guard during games. Great energy and atmosphere down there yesterday. Fun for all ages. 👍

I'm at World Cycling Conference (velo-City 2024) in Belgium.

A question of delegates at the event. I admit I did not say Edmonton and I'm not aware of anyone else from the city that is here. There's 1,600 delegates here.

Guess Edmonton is making an impression

Pretty amazing. Not even NYC or Montreal on there (who objectively should be if we are haha).

Says a lot about PR and the modern content ecosystem. Janz has done well to connect many of the big name creators to our city’s progress.

When I was in Ghent a few years back I was quite taken with the bike infrastructure.

97th Street Renewal underway. Going to have a new shared use path from 63rd to 51st Ave.
That's absolutely wonderful; people who work in those light industrial areas deserve to have safe and convenient active transportation options too.

Some designs released for Wîhkwêntôwin ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ (Oliver) Neighbourhood Renewal engagement. Happy to see the 97 Ave/110 St planned road closure for the High Level Bridge/Railtown MUP.

I am very happy with these designs. I really think lessons have been learned from 105 Ave. In sections where dedicated bike lanes are objectionable to some, the MUPs make a lot of sense. I prefer the MUPs to "bikeways" (sharrows) pretty much every time.

I really like the willingness to calm traffic with modal filters in the form of parks like at 112st, I do not like the zig-zag traffic calming at all, though.

Well done to the designers, this is up there with the 132st renewal.

I still don't see a 100 Ave MUP extension from west of 110 St to 116 St.
I think that's still coming. Curious to see what they have planned for that.

The railtown MUP and 100 Ave bike lane intersection can definitely be improved, too. Having recently used this a few times, while it's fairly easy to connect to it heading north from the High Level bridge (then east), the connection coming west then eventually south again is a bit sketchy.

Phase 2 of this neighbourhood plan will be coming a bit later this year and focusing on the important east/west routes and pedestrian areas like 100 Ave and 103 Ave.

If you're going to be bold and prioritize pedestrians, cyclists and other active modes, this is the neighbourhood to do it.
