Old BLVD building at Jasper and 108 St. has been painted grey and they seem to be doing all sorts of other renovations. Does anyone know what exactly the plans for it are?

Normally I'd say that's being a bit dramatic, but fully agreed on this one. We already don't have many buildings in Edmonton that use nicer materials like that, to cover it up like this and make it look basically like cinder block is absolutely baffling.

Orange Hub development (156 and Stony Plain) was proposed today at EDC. It’s a 3 storey structure with a “community space” on the main level and parkade on the upper two levels. The structure will be wrapped in chain link fence that is proposed to have public art on it. Artists in San Diego and Tokyo have done beautiful work with this actually as presented at the meeting.

EDC was thoroughly not impressed with chain link as a material choice so it will be interesting to see if they pursue it further. One member said it looked like a correctional facility. Contrary to some of the jokes on here about them being gentle to applicants - they definitely do not hold back their criticism.

The Committee found that the presented design fell short of reaching the design objectives expressed in the presentation, in terms of how the ground floor programming and choice of cladding materials enriches and responds to the existing urban context. In particular:
● Despite the temporary uses proposed for the ground floor, the Committee is concerned that the allocation of this level entirely for parking (with no opportunity for leasable commercial space) does not adequately create an active ground floor edge / interface that will support the outdoor gathering space.
● The design does not provide sufficient detail about the west facade, the future integration of public art, and the interface with the streetscape.
● While chain link addresses design criteria related to ventilation, security, and a readily obtained material, it carries negative connotations at odds with the community’s efforts at redevelopment and reinvestment; it does not enhance or integrate with the surrounding built-form and neighbourhood context; it does not promote existing and future streetscape integration and activation; it does not provide a durable and easily maintained product.
