Somewhere, someone on the EDC committee probably called this a "world class" canopy for Edmonton. Nothing to see here in the Edmonton design mix again. Between this, the library, Touch the Water and cynically probably the Warehouse Park, I'd like the city powers that be in the design sphere to carry my casket when I croak so they can let me down one more time...yawn.

The problem with bad design is that there are always excusers who are essentially the enablers in any society to allow that progression to grow. If you can't recognize bad design when it is sitting in front of your face, that is nothing to be ashamed of... it is an all too common affliction. Bad design is borne of a lack of understanding coupled with an innate laziness or lack of inquisitiveness. The Portico for the Edmonton Convention Centre is bad design. It is out of scale with the pedestrian street; it blocks the much more progressive design behind it (cheapening it all the while), it imitates other poorly designed adjacent elements, and -- in its bold effort to be seen -- it destroys the rythm of the street, purportedly Edmonton's main street.

So...there is already a canopy...this is just redoing it and raising it higher...am I missing something? Seems like a pretty innocuous project not worth the uproar lol. Possibly higher clearance is needed for the drive through?

The one good thing about these renderings, the drive-through appears to be gone.

I sat in on most of the EDC meeting for this proposal. A few notes:
- the scope of this does not include the recent improvements to the sidewalk and they are not going to rip any of it up for this project
- as @Mattyeg correctly said, they are using existing columns/structural support for the canopy and making it higher. I thought it actually looked leaner in this new design which is a good thing
- the band on the right is LED similar to the strip on Rogers place that has high res announcements which will be used for upcoming events
- the material on the Welcome Centre and the canopy is terracotta
- the landscape plan which was nothing exciting was also laid out and the EDC encouraged the use of plants that would actually thrive rather than planting Aspens in small spaces which were proposed
The deliberation isn’t open to the public but there wasn’t much grilling during the Q&A.

The governments of Alberta and Canada will provide more affordable housing for Indigenous peoples in north Edmonton.
Through this important project, Indigenous families, seniors, students and individuals with low incomes will have access to safe and affordable homes in north Edmonton.
Tribal Chiefs Ventures Inc. will offer 32 units of affordable housing across four fourplexes, each with eight units. The buildings are conveniently located close to transit, schools and shopping amenities. Rent for these units is set at 30 per cent of gross household income – the standard for affordability.

We will now have both a police and fire station that are infinitely nicer looking and more architecturally significant than our premier/marquee library bookending our main public square.

searched but couldn't find a thread for this. was down at the Kinsman field house today for a bit of walk and one section of parking has been blocked off and some serious excavation going on; looks like maybe footings for a new building. Anybody know?
