If I'm thinking of the same grey bars as you, they were what supported the original structure. When the roof was dismantled, the demolition folks just didn't bother taking the bars down at that time I guess. Great pictures, it's so exciting to see how massive this will be! Edmonton clearly took the Commonwealth Stadium crowds into account. Was biking by this today. There has been some BIG changes recently. There is now a lot of structural steel up, outlining most of the future station. They're installing the main structural beams, with the big grey arches covering the platforms, as well as extending out from the station a ways. (presumably to pick up the caternary?) the things are big. i didn't get the sense of scale from the renders, but this new structure will easily dwarf the original station.
I'll be honest, maybe i was just being a dumb blonde or something, but i thought the light grey bolted-together structures were the future station's roof. apparently those are temporary. The actual structure is clearly gonna be a LOT bigger.

Seeing this today has me really excited; i love the clarity of this design, and seeing the scale it's gonna have is going to make it quite a landmark.
Looking at the renderings on the project page, the platform actually goes beyond the beams at both ends; the ramps leading to the platforms on either end have very gradual inclines. You're right, this will be a massive station indeed! This will be so much better for the area compared to the dingy underground concourse from before.as well as extending out from the station a ways. (presumably to pick up the caternary?)
