Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

Economics, along with supply and demand, certainly come into play. But so do perceptions. The reality is Edmonton is now a 1.2-ish million city with 1.5+ million in the metro area with a large disposable income per capita.

When will our major airlines and the international ones figure that out?

I figure HSR is closer to 10 years out than 5 at best, and by then the combined catchment of the line should be getting close to 4mil. Wonder what sort of routes would be viable then?

Westjet seems to be figuring this out some, we also have Flair which so far is a survivor and has helped get us better domestic and US service. Now its Air Canada's turn.

Thanks chatGPT!

Wondering what your source on European trade is?
Didn't find any reports from a quick search, but I did find a list of Alberta's overseas trade offices

Seems like YEG should be chasing an Asian hub over a second European one

And Edmonton is still Edmonton, and the market has still spoken.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to have, but seems pretty clear that we don't have the population or business interests to properly support it yet.

Maybe it's one of the flights YEG could scoop off of YYC when HSR is in place?

Major export destinations, by region, in 2022:
  • United States, at 89.6% of the total value of exports
  • Europe, at 7.1% of the total value of exports
  • Asia, at 1.1% of the total value of exports

Thanks bot bro!

Seems like you didn't even read your own source tho... The graph shows the reverse values for Europe and Asia and the data table confirms.

Now just imagine what those number might look like if Alberta had direct access to the Pacific...

Of course if energy east or similar projects hadn't been blocked by you know who, maybe the Euro numbers would look different too.

But as it stands it seems like YEG should be focusing on getting us an Asian flight. I wonder if there are any routes where YEG would have a shorter flight path than YVR?

Neat. How often do you and your kids fly out there to visit?

These days? Rarely. :( But maybe I would fly out more if there were daily non-stop flights from YEG to LHR or LGW that are steady instead of coming and going at the whim of certain airline executives and politicians. I avoid flying from YYC unless there's no other choice.

The simpleflying article about Condor Airlines summer season (S25) flight ✈️ cuts. Yep Edmonton YEG/ Halifax YHZ are the only 2 cuts for their Canada 🇨🇦 schedule.

I wonder if the hailstorm at YYC last summer has anything to do with WS focus on YEG this year. WS had 20 planes out of commission for a considerable amount of time and by all accounts with climate change this could be a significant issue going forward.

Interesting point. The 2020 hailstorm caused about $1.3 billion in damages but didn't touch/damage the airport - although it was relatively close. The 2024 event caused $2.8 billion in damages. The hail swath was more than 120 kilometres long and 12 kilometres wide, and strong winds.

Probably not closer but not much difference
Seoul to YVR 8180km, to YEG 8379km. Interestingly if you were to make a connection from anywhere east of Edmonton the distance would be shorter.
YYZ to YVR 3368km YYZ to YEG 2713km. So about 600km further from YYZ to YVR but only about 200 km extra from YEG to Seoul.

Actually Seoul would be a really good get for YEG. Incheon is a great airport, plenty of connections and a very comfortable facility if you get a long layover.

Doubt it'd be viable at this point, but maybe someday...
