Not really sure what you're getting at here, I'm sure PAL knows their market, but I also know there's a lot of politics around flights, time slot and alliances.

And as PAL is a West Jet partner, odds are WS would try to herd that flight to their YYC hub, much as AC would to YVR.

If there was an unpartnered airline that flew the route YEG might have better chances, working with Flair to get feeder traffic from other western cities.

Pure pipe dream for now of course, but I don't think it's an impossibility..

Oh I agree completely, and that's what makes the idea of a YEG / MNL flight intriguing, as neither are major hubs, but both have decent regional connections.

I get that its not likely to be be the biggest money maker, but I don't think it'll be too long before demand from western Canada could make it profitable.

I've taken plenty of non-optimal flights over the years because they were the ones that worked within the times needed. Plenty of other travelers end up in similar situations, and don't really care if every airport they transit is a grade A hub or not..

Right, travellers don't care if it's a huge transit hub or not.... but airlines generally do. And they're the ones who plan routes.
Hypothetically speaking, even if YEG-MNL had more demand than say YVR-MNL or YYC-MNL, Air Canada and Westjet respectively would still operate the latter two rather than the first, due to the hub structuring. And since YVR and YYC also have better connections across North America than YEG, an airline such as PAL would likely pick those (or in YVR's case, already has picked) instead.

KLM partner with WS. It is doing really well as a result. I don’t understand the logic of an un-partnered airline it is the only way to generate extra passenger loads. Condor could only make the YEG route viable with their interline partnership with Lufthansa. Sadly that has expired and with it our connection

Ah OK I see what you're getting at now. Yeah just because WS and PAL are already partners doesn't stop PAL from seeking a YEG flight if they think it can be a money maker.

Looks like Vancouver is getting a direct Vietnam flight soon, so demand from the region is definitely still on the rise.

Around nine years ago it was reported by industry insiders on the SkyscraperPage Edmonton Forum that PAL was in talks to start an Edmonton route paired with Vancouver.

Interesting, I wonder what ever came of that?

Would have been a nice option, but functionally I suppose it's little different than taking any other connection to Vancouver.

Maybe they figured it was better to save the airframe stress on the big bird and let smaller planes feed it in YVR instead.

Still encouraging to know that YEG is on PALs radar tho!

You're probably right in that they figured it was more economical to fly to solely YVR and let small planes do the feeder work elsewhere.

I also hate to be "that guy" to say it, but if there is to be another Canadian route on PAL paired with Vancouver these days, it would probably be Calgary as opposed to Edmonton - slightly larger Filipino population and a stronger connecting network with WJA.

Speaking for myself, while I'm not anti-Calgary in any way, if I have to get a connection for an Asian flight and all things are equal I'll pick YVR over YYC very single time.

I'm sure I'm not alone there so I'll keep holding my breath and say YEG will get a direct Asian flight someday...

Starlux are looking to expand North American service. I wish Porter would code share with them out of YVR if that was an option. Dallas may be their next NA city. They now fly to LAX SFO SEA. I am flying Starlux out of SFO connecting in Taipae to Bangkok for a month In Thailand mid April.

Yes Starlux is expanding in North America & *if* they added service in Canada 🇨🇦, Vancouver YVR, Toronto YYZ & Montreal YUL will get consideration 1st as that’s where most Taiwanese 🇹🇼 Canadians reside✅, according to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwanese_Canadians

As for Starlux codesharing with a Canadian Airline ✈️, will have to wait and see.
But on Wikipedia mentions Starlux has plans to join the One World Alliance at end of 2025 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starlux_Airlines

Yes.

I wonder how long the KLM Edmonton YEG - Amsterdam AMS, Netherlands 🇳🇱 service would last *if* WestJet codeshare/feed ended & same goes for Air France Ottawa YOW - Paris CDG , France 🇫🇷 *if* the Porter Airlines codesharing deal ended?
Both routes very likely won’t be around if that did happen✅.
