Seems like a lot of cherry picking going on here, if you leave out retirees , ignore immigrants and then select a date range that is less favorable for more western provinces.

Interestingly, it doesn't seem to have convinced many here. I suspect it is mostly for local consumption by a provincial government or agency that wants to make things sound better.

GDP growth (%) for canadian cities 2001-2019

Will pull Statscan later.
REAL (above inflation) GDP (%) growth PER ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE INDIVIDUAL (working age, employed or actively looking for employment).
These kinds of comparison can be deceiving. In this particular case, some points to be observed:
1 - Populational growth in AB has exceeded the Canadian average by a wide margin over this period
2 - If your baseline is already high, it is harder to make significant percentage growth, but the gross number might still be actually higher
3 - AB suffered pretty bad with the oil crash and, while this is the province's fault for not pushing for economic diversification, cannot be ignored
4 - 2019-2023 numbers will probably show different stats. Looking at 2019, today, is already too far in the past, especially if we consider the COVID19 pandemic as the largest contributing factor of the past decade

Not my world, but this was what I referred to a few months ago with regards to needing new leadership and not just moving chairs around in Edmonton. If you recall, a few tech folks from Edmonton (now Calgary too) indicated that it was a significant reason why Edmonton stagnates and is passed over.

Again, not my world or lane, but it's apparently well-known.

I have nothing against Dodd and have never met the man, but something about the board chair of Edmonton's "innovation agency" being the CEO of a payday loans corp is just sad

I don't know him either. I agree it seems to be a different background for this, but it is financial services and this is one area that there is actually a lot of technology and innovation these days, so it might actually make sense.
