Edmonton's funicular wins international architecture award

One of the designers of Edmonton’s river valley funicular is “proud and humble” to have won an international architecture award.

When they first announced this thing, I didn't really get it, but having been there a few times with visitors to our city, it's actually a really nice addition to our city. Such a great place to appreciate the view, and a fun ride up and down to boot. It was even featured on the Amazing Race Canada.

It's been a huge boon to bike commuters, too! Myself included. ? ? ?

@archited It is surprisingly well-used through much of the day.

Once they complete the 'river valley balcony' connecting the funicular to a scenic path that extends from crowne plaza to Shaw onwards, that area is going to be a major tourist hot spot! Not to mention if they end up connecting the urban gondola with a station that is proposed to be situated on the south end of Telus tower IIRC

Edmonton's funicular wins urban design award

The 100 Street Funicular, which connects Edmonton's downtown to the river valley, has been recognized with a National Urban Design Award.

2020 National Urban Design winners selected - REMI Network

Twelve projects across Canada have been selected for the 2020 National Urban Design Awards. The awards will be presented in Edmonton this June.
