Grierson Hill Road closing for bridge construction
May 9, 2017

From 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 11 Grierson Hill Road will be closed until 6 a.m. Monday, May 15 between Connors Road and the Louise McKinney Park entrance. This closure is required for installation of bridge railings and electrical conduits on the Mechanized River Valley Access pedestrian bridge. Vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist detours will be in place to accommodate this work.

Northbound traffic on the Low Level Bridge, eastbound traffic on Rossdale Road/100 Street, and westbound traffic on 101 Avenue will detour north to Jasper Avenue. Access to Louise McKinney Park and the Shaw Conference Centre will be maintained from the top of Grierson Hill Road.

Pedestrian and cyclist access to north side trails will be limited between the Low Level Bridge and Dawson Bridge. Closure signs will be in place to let trail users know about the closures. Users are advised to go through downtown to get around the closure. Pedestrians may take ETS downtown from stop #1190 north of the Low Level Bridge.

Full detour maps are available on the project webpage.

The City thanks Edmontonians for their patience as we create an accessible, inclusive connection between downtown and the river valley.

MECHANIZED RIVER VALLEY ACCESS UPDATE

June 2017

Construction of the Mechanized River Valley Access (MRVA) began in March 2016 and is anticipated to be completed by late 2017. The City of Edmonton thanks drivers, businesses, and trail users for your patience as we complete this exciting new addition to our river valley.

Completed Work
  • The funicular has been installed and tested. Glass for the funicular canopy has also been installed at the promontory.
  • Electrical work, including conduits for the urban stair and promontory, are complete.
  • Precast concrete work is complete.
  • Pilings have been installed to support the art bases near the promenade.
  • Earthworks, including landscaping along urban stair.
Work in Progress/Upcoming Work
  • Installation of light fixtures and glazing guards (glass railings) along the urban stair.
  • Connecting the funicular to the City of Edmonton's network.
  • Completing bridge work: railings and Kebony wood finishes.
  • Installation and testing of the elevator.
  • Installation of project art.
Grand Opening
The City and its funding and construction partners are looking forward to opening the MRVA to the public this fall. The project is on track to open in September. A public notice and stakeholder invitation will be sent out prior to the event. Stay tuned!

Funicular construction in final stages, set to launch in fall
Motorists driving through the river valley can’t miss the new structure set to connect the downtown core with the trails below.

The Mechanized River Valley Access — also known as the funicular — is still on target, going through the “final touches” of construction and planning to start trips in the fall.

The project is roughly 90 per cent complete, Jesse Banford, the city’s director of facility infrastructure delivery, said Monday.

Still needing to be completed is some electrical work, installing and testing the elevator and landscaping, Banford said.

As well, a new interactive art project, inspired by the water patterns of the North Saskatchewan River, needs to be installed. The art project will be located just north of the promenade where rides down into the river valley will end.

The $24-million River Valley Alliance project will transport up to 10 pedestrians and cyclists in an enclosed vehicle down a cable railway behind the Hotel Macdonald.

From the promenade level, visitors can take a bridge over Grierson Hill Road and an elevator down to the trail system.

Edmonton's funicular will be ready by winter, city says
edmonton-funicular.jpg

The funicular will be ready before the end of the year, says the city. (City of Edmonton)

Edmonton's funicular will be taking people into and out of the river valley before winter, according to the City of Edmonton.

"We're still on track to be opening up this fall," said Jesse Banford, director of facility infrastructure delivery.

Banford said the city is looking at doing a grand opening some time after the election in October.

"We're attending to the final touches," he said. "We're 90 to 95 per cent complete."

The work is scheduled to be done by the end of December, he said.

There will be no charge to use the funicular, which passengers can summon by pushing a call button.

It means that you get to ride most of the way down the valley embankment -- a great means of giving elderly or disabled individuals the chance to get down to the river's edge and enjoy nature like us able-bodied souls are able to do. It probably will become a hangout space like the worlds end, as well.
