Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

I biked to the Heritage Festival this year, from Saskatchewan Drive to Borden Park it took me half an hour, and except for the very small segment on 113 avenue between 82nd St and the park, it was a fairly pleasant and safe experience, with bike paths or SUPs all the way. I would like to point out, however, that 112 avenue, east of the Commonwealth, could very well do with an SUP or a bike lane, as well as 103A avenue, east of 99 street.
 
Some info from insiders on that 100mil that’s been somewhat quiet this year. Still a good year till we start to have new infrastructure, but hopefully in 3 years we start to feel the impacts.

Edmonton also received $8.9M from feds earlier this year for some of the planning and study work, which should make that $100M go a bit further in terms of actual infrastructure.

That’s was I told my city buddy as well haha. Why does it take 12 months to plan something already 50% planned? Multiple FT employees every week for a year is a lot of capacity….for a few district connectors? Idk. Glad we’re getting them. Frustrating we talk about climate emergencies though and then stuff like this and making the LRT safe take years… words vs actions.

West Central is getting some good bike infrastructure with the Bike Plan, but this neighbourhood renewal will give a great expansion of the possible grid on the west end. Please help out if you have a few minutes to advocate for continuous crossings, bike lanes/paths, wider sidewalks, etc.
 
Biked from Bonnie Doon to pick up my vehicle at Gateway Toyota. 91st MUP needs some love south of Henday. Some big asphalt lifts. And then signage of where to go when you get to Ellerslie. Such simple solutions to make it easier and safer to bike.
Definitely. In addition, last time I rode it I found that the alignments of the curb ramps north of 23 Ave along 91 St towards the Whitemud are pretty bad/awkward too.
 
Does anyone foresee a time when there is a SUP along 100 ave from 231st that would connect to the 178st or 163st SUP? It is a big missing link with a lot of potential.

Not sure I see that getting built anytime with the current sites restrictions and henday crossing.

More logically, 87ave is the play. But the west valley LRT project royally f-d up by not ensuring high quality bike infrastructure around the project area. Instead there will be inefficient MUPs that switch sides constantly and force crossings that’ll make most people not even want to bike.

I wish they had elevated the whole line with a bi directional bike lane underneath the entire way. The 87ave, 156st, stony plain road, and 104ave corridors could all use high quality bike lanes and would give a major boost to a west end grid. Such a missed opportunity.

Was just in Oslo and this is a nice complete street and main corridor. Wide pedestrian plaza with lots of vegetation, bike lanes, car lanes and tram/lrt in the middle - but bike lane not always protected. In fact most bike lanes i saw weren't. But traffic speeds definitely slower - 40 and 30 most places I saw.

And the cross walk is raised so people aren't stepping down and it natural slows traffic speed down.

I'm in Stockholm now and there is an incredible amount of people biking here - way more than Oslo and almost like Copenhagen - although infrastructure not as good yet. Definitely more bikes than cars on this main thoroughfare in Central part of city - and all ages (adults).
