I don’t think Edmonton has the infrastructure to host more than a couple games, which would not have made up for the costs around hosting. A great as it would have been it wasn’t meant to be.
We have more than enough infrastructure.

Can you expand on your thoughts?

I don’t think people fully understand the scale of the World Cup. Where do 10’s of thousands of international tourists stay? How do they get from the airport into town? Not to mention the Reno’s to the outdated stadium that would be required.

For starters, Commonwealth Stadium insists on artificial turf whereas the World Cup demands natural grass.

There's other reasons, such as an outdated stadium, lack of quality downtown hotels and lack of international flights. Need I go on?
Turf is changeable, right? It was grass at one point yes?

We understand that other jurisdictions build entire stadiums for such events right? Like how we built ours for the commonwealth games.

Im sure, in a city the houses world class engineering and construction companies, we could build things such as new concourses
and hotels….

I could be crazy though.

We could build it but that’s not the question.
The question is wether or not the cost is worth it for 2-3 games.

You realize you are making that argument on a threat for a building that was built for the commonwealth games right?

This entire threat is your own counter argument?

Kenny making demands on the bid, that were detached from reality, was the primary reason we were overlooked. This is largely agreed upon and was vocalized the minuet the GOA put on the conditions.
The conditions were basically to have enough games here to make it worth the investment demanded by FIFA. One of the few things Kenney right. I despise Kenney, but FIFA is even more corrupt than the current UCP crop. I'm perfectly happy not to have our tax dollars go to subsidizing that horrid organization for not enough of a return.

Kenny also demanded a certain number of Canada games. This was the nail in the coffin.

Guys, things cost money. We arent going to grow and evolve without spending money…

Now if you would like to argue we live in a world where we should be able to invest for investing sake, lets do that. The reality is we often need a reason.

Look at Calgary, it needed a reason to refurbish old olympic infrastructure. Since they turned that down they are now struggling to figure out how they will get the needed investment.

We need investment, i dont care how. Was the world cup perfect, nope but i dont care. Im now too old to continue to allow perfect to be the enemy of good.

People aren't going to watch to support FIFA any more than people going to an NHL game are going to support Betman. Kenney seemed to go out of his way to put up obstacles for this before, thank goodness he's gone now.

It would be nice to see more bigger world class events here again, this is a good start.

Sadly, I am still of the belief that we were simply a 'backup plan' and somewhat leveraged to coerce Vancouver/BC Gov't. to make it happen.

We did not have the hotel rooms for starters.

I tend to agree. When Montreal and Vancouver both pulled out early on, Soccer Canada needed a city along with Toronto as part of the joint bid.

Province didn't do us any favours either.

When this World Cup friendly was being considered for Edmonton about 6 months ago, Soccer Canada, according to Steven Sandor's EJ story, was mindful of the fact that people in Edmonton are still very sour about being snubbed as a host city (and partially used I will add) and whether that would impact interest/attendance (and let's face it - revenue) for this match.

I have no doubt Edmonton would have been a successful World Cup host site, and I expect attendance for this game will also be great.

I'm going because it's about supporting our players and Canada - not Soccer Canada which has done some questionable things in its management of the teams (men/women), the players (payment), and it's involvement in our World Cup bid.
