Yellowhead Trail Upgrades

They should never have closed off 149st. the fly over would have reduced traffic on ST Al tr and 156st. The lighted round about on 118 has been there a long time and does work. the problem is further up.

City owns all the land NW of that corner now where the Ramada/Esso, I almost wonder if they're considering holding it to accommodate a future flyover if for no other reason than to accommodate 149th NB -> YHT WB traffic. Especially with the neighbourhoods south of Big Lake growing at an exponential rate it's only going to get more congested on 156th/St A Trail.

The City closed two WB YHT access points from the south (149th and 142nd) while adding no additional capacity in that whole stretch despite the clear growth that was and will continue to be seen in the west end/Acheson. Will probably just continue to harm industrial properties between 111t and the Yellowhead as why stay in Edmonton with congestion getting trucks out when you could locate somewhere like Acheson instead with easier access and less property taxes.

I assume the no flyover decision was made due to the tracks north of 149 Street. A flyover/bridge would have had to extend all the way across the rail line.

At least there are collector roads like 123 Avenue and 128 Avenue that will take vehicles and trucks to 156 Street or St. Albert Trail.

Happy for it to be built. Not happy for the burden to not be carried enough by users that live outside the city.

A higher gas/mileage tax is a better solution than tolls. And more provincial funding for roads used by our region would be more equitable.
I don’t know what the fair split is but province and feds are picking up 1/4 of the bill each for these reasons

Apologies for putting this in two threads but I think it's important for both:

Sooo...

Bear with me here because from the City's perspective, this project is not 10% over budget as is being reported here (by the City???)..

The original formula was a 1/3 1/3 1/3 split between the City the Province and the Feds with each party committed to $241.6 million when the project was first approved in 2016.

In 2017 - less than two years later - the project cost was updated from that initial $724.8 million to approximately $1.0027 billion but the provincial and federal contributions remained at $241.6 million while Edmonton's contribution increasing to $519.5 million. At that point in time, while project costs had "only" increased by 38%, all of that increase was to be borne by the City which means that from the City's perspective, the project was then 115% over budget, not 38%.

We now see that the project is another 10% over the revised budget (which is another 15% over the original budget which should remain a fixed baseline) and counting at $1.1044 billion. However, the provincial and federal contributions still remain at a total of $483.2 million while Edmonton's contribution will now increase to a total of $625.2 million and counting.

Based on the City's original financial commitment of $241.6 million, this project is not 10% over budget as implied in the article, it is 159% over budget (115% in 2017 and another 44% as reported today).

And that 1/3 1/3 1/3 split is now roughly 22% 22% 56%.

It's projects like this and accounting/reporting like this that has placed the City in its current financial predicament.

I think Yellowhead is an important project to complete. I saw a video on Global News showing the construction at 127 Street. Even with the construction west of St. Albert Trail complete, eastbound traffic was still backed up to 156 Street.

Gee whiz….maybe if the city ran their operations as if the it was their “own” money for a minute they might see the $100,000 worth of delineators along Gateway from the city outskirts inward for a few km that are pretty much rendered garbage now from being abandoned in the snow for the rest of the winter. Yeah I know it’s tripping over dollar bills to pick up nickels…but these nickels add up to taxpayers
