New cargo facility opens at Edmonton International Airport
Edmonton-for-web-696x464.jpg

Edmonton International Airport
A new state-of-the-art $10 million Canadian ($7.9 million) cargo and logistics warehouse opened on Friday, 20 October at Edmonton International Airport (EIA).

The new 50,000 square-foot cargo facility is the third building owned by Aeroterm and construction began in Spring 2016 and it opened earlier this month.

Local media also reported on Friday, that Korean Air Cargo will be expanding its Edmonton service, although there was no confirmation of how many additional flights would be added, but the report said it would not be a scheduled service.

So far this year, Korean Air Cargo has flown eight flights from EIA, and a further two more a scheduled by the end of 2017.

In August, Nippon Cargo Airlines included Edmonton as a Canadian cargo destination, as part of its alignment with Atlas Air.

For the first time last year, EIA carriers brought in fresh cherries from Washington state to be moved to China while EIA has also moved crabs, which were then flown on an Air China Cargo flight to China. Other operators at EIA include Icelandair Cargo and Air France/KLM Cargo.

Work begins on 'mega' soccer centre in south Edmonton
Construction has started in south Edmonton on a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art soccer complex.

Known as the Edmonton Soccer Dome, the $7-million air-supported structure will boast the first full-size indoor field for soccer in the city.

"This will be the biggest sports dome in all of Canada and it's a great addition to Edmonton," said Antony Bent, the facility's general manager. "This really is going to be a megaproject."

The giant dome, 25 metres tall, is being built by the Edmonton Scottish Society on its 8.5 hectares of land at 3105 101st St. SW.

It will be 152 metres long and 82 metres wide.

Scottish society members have been dreaming of an indoor facility for several years because of a crunch in finding indoor playing time in winter.

"Facility space and the times at which facilities are available quite often are after 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., and that's tough for young families," said Kevin Poissant, technical director of the Edmonton Scottish United soccer club.

Poissant said earlier plans for a traditional-style building were too costly but the idea of an air-supported structure brought the dream within reach.

He likens the dome to a giant air balloon with the covering fabric held up by blowing air and held in place by cabling.

Downtown Edmonton reaches for the sky as Ice District towers rise up
What started as a vision is now turning into something tangible and people across Edmonton are taking notice.

“It just worked out perfectly,” explained photographer Jeff Wallace, who last week took a photo of the changing downtown skyline.

The image shows the Ice District towers at the height of many current buildings in downtown.

Construction is at a tipping point where soon two buildings will rise much higher than anything that’s been built before in the capital.

“You then realize it’s probably only at half height.”

“People were quite amazed at how the towers in the Ice District are starting to rise taller and taller,” said Wallace, describing the reaction after sharing his image on several forums. He said people have commented the buildings “really start to have a presence and weight in the downtown core.”
