LRT Safety

I think you missed the point.

Perception is not reality as the other poster put forward. You are highlighting actual safety concerns. This is extremely different who someone who uses the system, sees thibgs that make them feel uncomfortable, but never encounters an actual safety concern.

Lets be clear there are people who out there who wont “feel” safe because they see someone of a different race/social economical status despite them never actually being unsafe.

Again I point out I feel less safe by crowds of police blocking lrt exits, milling about and questioning people who are simply using the system.
I think your assumption that people claiming to feel unsafe or uncomfortable is related to race or harmless homeless people is deeply dismissive.

Anyone that regularly uses transit, especially centrally or north, will have had numerous encounters with unsafe people.

Let’s be clear, we have hundreds of criminals using transit, or in transit spaces, daily in our city. That’s an issue. Go to any bus station, ride the train, walk the pedways.

Open drug use, alcohol, knives, red alert colours, screaming and mental health episodes, erratic movements, carrying stolen goods, graffiti and vandalism….. it’s criminal and that’s why people are upset. Not cause a “minority” is around…
 
Agreed, and with millions of trips a month, how many safety incidents occur during that same time period? what is that expressed as a ratio?

I will bet large amounts of money I am more likely to be pick pocketed on the paris metro than to have anything negativity to me on the Edm LRT. YET Paris remains one of the most visited cities on the planet…. There needs to be room to discus bias here as its a HUGE problem.

Yes, ridership is up. And yes, it comes to millions of trips per month - 4.65 the last I saw.

The caveat with that is the same one that comes with counting visits to the Ice District in the millions. There aren’t 4.65 million riders every month.

If there are 4.65 million trips a month, there’s roughly 150,000 trips per day. Assuming those riders who go somewhere also return, that translates to roughly 75,000 riders per day out of a population of roughly 1 million..

No one claimed that there were millions of users? I clearly stated trips.

When we purchase ets’s service we buy a “trip” it seems perfectly reasonable that ets measure trips.

Indeed. A population of roughly 1 million - of which about 300,000 are either children under 14 or seniors over 65 (StatsCan 2021) and therefore rather unlikely to be commuting to the office every day.

So a population of roughly 700,000 - of which probably half work in Acheson, Nisku, the Industrial Heartland, or some kind of industrial or office park hellscape within Edmonton limits (my own guess, but please humour me).

So a population of about 350,000 who work somewhere transit might actually make sense to use as a form of transportation - of which about 1/3 are probably WFH at least a couple of days per week.

Okay so a population of about 233,333 people who are between the ages of 15 and 65, who work somewhere with feasible transit access, and who are expected to show up to their office (or school) most days of the week.

Yeah, about 75,000 individual transit commuters per day sounds about right.

Looks like all of the plexiglass on 104st at Bay is being replaced with something higher quality and there is new lighting in there making both entrances MUCH better.

New material - old tired + they heard my call to put camera in the most problematic spaces! I just hope that it is high enough to avoid damage.

One step forward, one remains holding us back. Come on folks... basic CPTED (rule #1) is transparency = > safety. If these continue to be semi-opaque or worse for 4-6 months of the year, what's the point of new glass anyways.

1. Remove the upper doors like they used to be.
or
2. Have a vent or two to balance off the warm air to prevent most of the icing AND to not make it warm space to hang out in.

Took my kid to city center via the train to run an errand. Train itself was fine but as usual the big issue is how the elevators smell like urine. It's a major disincentive to go downtown with a stroller. We desperately need attended public washrooms in the Churchill area that are open 24/7 and to folks on the street. I know it would cost a pretty penny but alot less than putting attendants in every elevator!

Carrie already responded (THANK YOU) and agrees it is unacceptable and will speak to ops.
Can you please ask Carrie about sending feedback like this through 311? The "transit feedback" category requires operator info, incident time, and other info that is not applicable in cases like this. Yet, they said at the service plan event last year to send suggestions through 311.
