LRT Safety

“We saw open violence, we saw knives, we saw open drug use, a lot of general bad behaviour,” said ???. “Everybody I’m talking to, no one wants to ride the train anymore.”

That was Calgary councillor Dan McLean today. They are looking for solutions as well from more enforcement to turnstiles.

Maybe the two cities need to join forces in solutioning and provincial advocacy.

Interesting counter story to the lrt is not safe narrative.

Data released during an Edmonton police commission meeting last month showed crime on the LRT system grew in severity from February of 2021 to the end of the year, at a faster rate than the city’s overall severe-crime trend.

But looking at the number of social disorder incidents tells a different story.

Numbers from Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) obtained by Criminal Trial Lawyers Association (CTLA) this week, and validated by Postmedia, show the rate of incidents reported by transit security per 100,000 trips has generally been dropping since last spring.

People forget that the previous council had put in place multiple years of very low tax increases or in some cases zeros. At some point, things break. Seems pretty obvious that a lot of City departments are way overstretched. You have dirt, sand and filth on the streets well into May, you have a complete absence of police where they are needed, all the affordable housing is on wait list, City doesn't really cut grass properly or maintain landscaping anymore, the list goes on.
