General Food & Dining Thread

^why not? It's an eclectic neighbourhood with many backgrounds. Regardless, my guess is that the disorder and change of habits post-fire were death knells.

An Italian grocery store in Chinatown wasn't really a good fit, was it? In any case, that post-fire reconstruction should house a good dim sum restaurant. There's already a deluge of herbal medicine shops and Vietnamese eateries in Chinatown.
They pre-dated that part of Chinatown, being in that location since 1960, as the Asian businesses didn’t really start moving in until the mid-1980s.

The lack of an Italian Centre shop in Oliver is a head scratcher to me. A location near 109th, maybe where the Best Buy is, would do very well.

Sadly, saw that one coming. We drove by on the holidays when the Italian Centre was PACKED and it had almost nobody there.

A series of unfortunate events, disorder and 'out of sight out of mind'.

I miss those sandies, but always found the IC just that much better.
Yeah, I've always been a big fan of Italian bakery, especially since their Beverley and their old 118 Ave locations had been my go-tos before I moved to the core. I still went to their 97 street location before it burned because they were always fairly competitive price-wise. After the rebuild, it seemed like their prices were significantly higher than Italian Centre for cold cuts and cheeses and with a more limited selection, and they just didn't have the produce and other grocery items of IC.

Mr. Bao on Whyte for some XLB and red oil wonton; maybe the best in the city thus far for both. $12 per.

Lauren Kyle McDavid is opening Bar Trove at Canada Permanent Building (10126 100 St NW) this spring. Hopefully signalling 1. Growing confidence in Edmonton's downtown, and 2. The McDavid's are here to stay.

Great news, seeing that Lauren's husband needs to sign a new contract with the Oilers next season.
