General Food & Dining Thread

Goddamnit, guys, I thought I was still on my game as a YEG foodie but I’m so out of the loop 😭😭😭
I've given up on that. We rarely eat out anymore and my finger of the pulse of all things food-related slipped during the pandemic and has never come back. Plus if I have to drive to go somewhere to eat, I won't (with the notable exception of Mai Mai Viet Kitchen, which is far but so worth it for their Vietnamese crepes)

We are the same way. But sometime before Covid we just lost our desire to eat at the newest offering. Now when we do go out its to one of our favorite locations. Or an old tried and true place like Normands etc.Last new place we went to is Wildroot in St Albert

Before responding further, may I ask as to why such a position/attitude?
It wasn't really a choice, per se, just something that happened over time. During the pandemic we started cooking more and experimenting more with what we cooked, and just got that much better at it. My husband also got inspired by the Great British Bake Off during that time and discovered a real talent for baking, so there is little reason to buy pastries, tarts, croissants, breads, since I have an in-house pastry chef. And then the pandemic turned us both into hermits. And we're getting older and are less willing to eat in a place that's blasting music or has questionable service.

I have always loved the Edmonton food scene and, having lived in quite a few places over the years, think we have a fabulous selection of restaurants. It's just that I no longer feel the drive to try out the latest and greatest. This is in no way a reflection of my attitude towards our restos. It's all internal - we just like to stay in.

As far as not really wanting to drive to eat out, well, that's a living downtown thing. I like having a walkable life.

Anyone tried the Jimmy John's that opened?
I think you are referring to "Jersey Mike's" that opened 2 weeks ago in the Home Depot parking lot on 137th Ave. That is the store that we ALL want to visit soon! Their product and delivery of said product is 2nd to none.....and I honestly think they are on a whole new level of Sub sandwich'ery......

Jimmy John's is good......but here is the order of Subs - my opinion - but should be everyone else's opinion as well:

Jersey Mike's
Firehouse Subs
Pot Belly
Port O' Subs
Blimpie (if they are still around - haven't had one in 20 years since the one on 104th ave shut down next door to SBux)
Jimmy John's
Subway
Mr.Sub

The Jimmy John's is owned by the same people that own Guru, as well as some locations of Pita Pit, Little Caesars, Second Cup, and Marble Slab around the GEA. It's fine if you want to pass on all American-originating franchises, but you can skip the guilt trip.
This article is more appropriate....

I'll continue to avoid American chains as long as that orange asshole is in the White House.
FWIW I stop by Second Cup at Unity Square about once a month and I'll occasionally go to Guru in ICE District.

I actually meant to say Jersey Mikes, not Jimmy Johns. They really need to have less similar names.

The YEG Jersey Mikes is owned by Redberry, another Canadian company. Good to hear that the sandwiches are solid, although I doubt they can hold a candle to Farrow.
