Federal Politics

Nanos poll shows that respondents think Carney is better equipped to deal with Trump than Poilievre.

Poilievre received the second most support with 26 per cent of people surveyed saying he would do the best job.

Thirteen per cent of people answered Freeland, 1 per cent said Gould, while 12 per cent said they were unsure and nine per cent said it wouldn’t make a difference.

I find it interesting that Freeland who was quite involved with dealing with Trump and successfully negotiating the current CUSMA (Canada, US, Mexico agreement) free trade deal does not poll higher.

However, Carney does considerable international experience and connections from his past work, so that is probably reflected in people's impressions.

Canada needs a DOGE, like yesterday. Can you imagine the amount of corruption and waste it would discover. I wonder why "Global Affairs Canada" abruptly deleted its entire public database of foreign aid spending, rendering the data inaccessible to the public. Very suspicious. Canada has so much corruption. Canadians pay too much tax and where does it all go? The people have a right to know. It's hard to believe Mark Carny and the Libs have a chance at forming a minority government after their mismanagement in so many areas of this country's affairs. If they win then Canadians deserve the country they get More GDP decline, more taxes, more lack of accountability, more climate change scams, more Chinese government interference. If the Libs continue to govern this country its not hard to fathom the USA GDP per capita doubling Canada's within 10 years.

In Malaysia where I have lived for the past 12 years there are two national car makers - Perodua and Proton. Perodua is half owned by Daihatsu (a subsidiary of Toyota) and Proton is half owned by Chinese Geely. Nonetheless, there is substantial Malaysian ownership of the car companies. Toyotya, Honda etc are popular here but there is tariffs on foreign cars so Perodua is by far the most popular car company here - all manufacturing done in the country and not totally foreign owned and controlled like GM, Ford etc in Ontario. Why can a MIC like Malaysia pull this off but Canada cannot? Malaysia is constantly upgrading infrastructure - the MRT system in KL is twice as big as when I moved here 12 years ago - the country has built a west coast railway along the west coast of Malaysia ( a huge undertaking) and is currently working on a east coast railway (even bigger undertaking) plus they are working on the pan-Borneo highway etc etc. In Canada, these things are very very difficult to build, especially since the Libs took over - why? This type of infrastructure is crucial to support economic growth. Canada will continue to slide in the wrong direction. Health care here is universal system but with private options and its work very well - just like South Korea. Why are so many Canadians unwilling to allow some private options into health care - it will take some pressure off the public system. Malaysians I talk to about this can't understand why Canada is so against allowing private health options. Canada needs change to ensure its competitive and support economic growth - the political system needs reform - DOGE is needed - tighter immigration controls and planning, tougher laws on crime and drugs, rooting out settler - colonialism at universities and DEI needs to go. Looks like staus quo (or worse) with Mark Carney getting traction. Another Liberal government will be the death knell for this country.

Hard pass on the doge approach to things. They are a bunch of despots running around throwing out the good with bad, enacting a culture war, breaking laws and taking revenge.

There is government waste and inefficiency yes, as in most large organizations, but this whole mantra of government cuts is just a fantasy too. If you look at the numbers in the us, unless you cut defence (yeah right) or social entitlements they won’t put a dent in things. They have a revenue problem down there exacerbated by loopholes for the uber rich enacted by Trump. In the meantime shutting down usaid is gonna leave a vacuum in the developing world that china and Russia are gonna run right into. Not to mention some very important health and humanitarian missions will get shut down.

The much vaunted USA that you want to mimic so so much lags Canada in virtually every metric you want to choose regarding the human existence- lower life expectancy, higher rates of gun and overdose deaths, higher rates of illiteracy, lower education scores, lower happiness indexes. The list goes on. The gdp growth is a mirage, it’s concentrated and not benefiting their people.

Canada can be more productive, and grow our economy, and not be the US , that should be the goal here,

^^

Hmmm…

Malaysia is 331,000 square kilometres. Canada is just shy of 10,000,000.

Malaysia is roughly 740 km from top to bottom. Canada is just over 5,500 km wide.

Malaysia enjoys annual temperature swings in the range of 15C. Canada endures differentials in excess of 70C.

Malaysia builds slightly less than 740,000 vehicles per year. Canada builds 1,400,000.

Average household income in Malaysia is 8,500 RN or $2,725 Canadian. In Canada it’s $70,500 although both countries suffer from a high degree of income inequality in both sides of those numbers.

While our official government and legal structures appear similar, Canada’s monarch is largely symbolic while Malaysia’s elected monarch has and exercises a great deal of control over government and civic elections haven’t been held since 1965. Although improved in the last decade, corruption is still a concern.

We were in KL and Malacca in October visiting with friends and family so I’m not entirely unfamiliar with the country from a first hand basis although not as in-depth perhaps as your own experience.

You are however, comparing maple leaves to palm fronds.

Imagine if Justin Trudeau appointed Galen Weston or Peter Green, unilaterally and without Parliamentary authorization or debate, to shut down entire government programs and services with the assistance of a goon squad of unqualified 20 year-olds. No thanks.

Canada ranks 12 on the least corrupt perception list Indonesia ranks 112. Maybe you should be more concerned about what is going on in your own back yard before you start giving other people unsolicited advice.
As a side note US rank 25th. I can only imagine how low they will sink after this DOGE scandal comes to light and all the tech bros make off with $100 billion the federal treasury is about to “invest” in crypto currency.

Trump just did pre-game interview with Fox - of course. He hasn't put to rest the Tariffs or us becoming the 51st state......

And Then Preston Manning comes out with a comment yesterday Morning about Trump's 51 State comment. " we should really take it as a joke". That was right before Trumps Fox ramble.

Has he lost the plot? Maybe Manning needs someone to help him get back to the retirement home or explain that Trumps "jokes" are often more serious than they initially seem.

I realize it takes a while to catch on this strange approach, but some seem to catch on sooner than others.
