Federal Politics

So Trudeau's university buddy and ultra-mediocre Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie told Vassy Kapelos on national TV that the Liberals are willing to cut off Alberta’s oil exports to the U.S. in response to the Trump tariffs. Why not cut off Quebec Hydro exports? Why not cut off exports from Ontario? Entirely predictable from the Liberal party of Canada that has a long long history of being more than happy to sacrifice Alberta's, and western Canada's prosperity and success whenever they want to help central Canada. Very happy Premier Smith is standing up for Alberta - and not Rachel Notely or Nenshi that is for sure.
%100 agree. I don't care who goes to Mar-a-lago, he, she, them etc. Tariffs will set our economy back, and we still have bills to pay. We need to do what ever we can to avoid them. IF ONLY we had built more pipelines to tidewater.... sigh.. Should have, but did not.
Alberta has supplied jobs and dollars to Canada for decade, now you have this buffoon Jolie, willing to sacrifice AB. WTH, I suppose when you have nothing to lose ( like her pension and wealth), you stand for nothing. Quebec has been quiet about their hydro exports. It's almost like, hard working provinces, with the most to lose are doing their utmost to avoid tariffs.

Joly said 'everything' is on the table if Trump puts 25% Tariffs on Canada - she was only asked about energy and she replied 'everything' is being considered. Not sure why you think Ontario/Quebec exports aren't included in the statement 'everything'. Seems like a smart approach to me. Everyone is in agreement that tariffs will be devastating to Canada and must be avoided so she said a second time - everything is on the table in terms of Canada's response if the US goes ahead, but of course nobody wants that and the government is having ongoing discussions with US officials.

Do you have a statement from Joly saying Quebec/Ontario exports are excluded?

As well, Trump announced his intention to impose a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum imports on March 1, 2018. In a tweet the next day, Trump asserted, "Trade wars are good, and easy to win." On March 8, he signed an order to impose the tariffs effective after 15 days. Canada retaliated dollar for dollar on specific exports from the US.
The U.S. lifted the steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada on May 20, 2019. The government did pretty well I would say given the circumstances and who they were dealing with. Other countries didn't fare as well.

The US Aluminum Association stated that the tariff did "little to address the China challenge while potentially alienating allies and disrupting supply chains that more than 97 percent of US aluminum industry jobs rely upon."

That's part of the reason those states didn't vote for Trump in 2020 after they did support him in 2016. And Trump stands to lose the support he just got when the mid-term elections happen in 2026 if Americans end up having to pay more for products or gas, not to mention lose jobs.

Trump is a bully and a convicted felon and you think Canada did something wrong - he's done this before and with many countries. He gets off on this. I mean he's threatening force to take Greenland and Panama Canal. And he wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico. Haha.

"Canada always wants to punish Alberta by blocking oil sales!"

Also...

"Canada's only prospers by stealing Alberta's oil revenues via transfer payments!"

Any more contradictions and I'd think I was in church.

This Liberal government, and others before it, has been openly hostile to Alberta's O&G industry and there is absolutely a distinct difference with how Alberta (and other W. Canadian industries) are, and have been treated when compared to the main industries of central Canada. Its ironic that the Liberals and convicted felon Gibeault, after attacking Alberta's O&G industry, now realize its the most valuable commodity they have to use leverage against the USA. The car industry in Ontario can be made redundant very quickly - and Quebec is already a subsidized welfare province.

"Convicted felon" - you mean the ridiculous charges brought against him in the lawfare fiasco by overzealous Democrat DAs spurred on by Biden's DOJ? If Biden wasn't able to pardon his son and his son's laptop (that Biden and MSM all said didn't exist) then Biden would probably be a convicted felon too. Also, Trump's x-posts are classic obnoxious Trumpian negotiation tactics - do you really think he is going to send the marines to invade Greenland? What I think he is doing is some geo-political posturing to get more access to Greenland's bounty of precious metals that are so crucial in AI / Tech development because the USA and China are in a AI development war. I noticed yesterday the PM of Greenland extended an invitation to Trump to have further talks about economic cooperation - doesn't sound like he is too worried about a hostile takeover.

Actually Ontario itself was talking about cutting off its power exports to the US as part of standing up for itself and Canada. And in case you missed it, Rachel Notley is no longer in politics - retired in Dec 2024.

Carney's expected to launch his campaign announcement on Thursday here in Edmonton. I would laugh at the absolute audacity if he ran in Edmonton-Centre (he probably won't, he'll run in Ottawa most likely). Either way, an LPC led by Carney will actually have my vote, and this is coming from a strong Dipper voter.

As a big Oilers fan, maybe he's launching at Ice District, ha

I hear he's going to be on Jon Stewart show tonight.

Just once, I’d like a trump supporter to stand up and admit what he is, and own it. He was convicted in a state court, which has nothing to do with Bidens DOJ. He was only saved from conviction in federal courts from the special prosecutor because they dragged their heels and found a very sympathetic Trump judge.

He has been found civially liable for sexual abuse by a jury, meaning they found it likely that he did it.

His companies have filed for bankruptcy 6 times. He paid a porn star off for an affair that occurred while his wife was pregnant.

Just own it, I’d honestly respect your opinion more if you did. He is all of those things, probably more, but you don’t care because you like his policies more. That’s an opinion, but own up to it.

And his posts and talks about takeovers only help Putin, China and anyone else who has expansionist tendencies. Governing is not a business negotiation(which by his bankruptcy record is a good thing), and he shouldn’t just be dismissed by saying it’s just a negotiation.

He did well.
So globalist WEF elitist Laurentian bootlicker old boys clubber Mark Carney does an interview on a left leaning American TV show and its suddenly "game over" for PP and "the Cons". I guess the 30 point lead PP has over the Liberals is a smoke show - the multiple Liberal ethics violations, the tanking GDP per capita and non-existent foreign investment, the crime wave, the record use of food banks, unaffordable housing, inflation, woke nonsense, rampant anti-semitism and the complete fiasco of having a leadership race when over 70% of Canadians want an election at this crucial time for the country - all that can be swept under the rug due to a "absolutely brilliant interview" on some leftist hack's TV show. Thanks for clearing that up.

I'm a Trump supporter and am very happy he won the election in the USA with a diverse coalition that destroyed Harris and the corrupt and out of touch Dems. The American electorate also gave him the Senate and The House because they are tired of all the woke nonsense and being led by polticians that are too focused on niche virtual signalling social issues instead of the economy, security, effective and regulated immigration and creating a successful society based on wealth generation from private business instead of taxing the shite out of everything and growing an already bloated beaurocracy. And I am happy that this same common sense wave will soon take over Canada. Hopefully the UK will follow after Keir "Grooming Gang" Starmer loses the next election there to the Reform Party!! Better days ahead!!

I'd laugh. I still hear rumblings he might run in Edmonton-Centre, which would be incredibly bold.

Either way, I'd rather an Edmontonian central banker to lead the country rather than Walmart Milhouse.

This is NOT a good place to announce a liberal leadership campaign. Good luck Carney.
