Ah I didn't realize the Starbucks at Calgary trail and 55 Ave closed and probably moved to this location. There's also the one just above 51 Ave.
Lots of locations closed here. Is Starbucks going the way of 7-11? I think some of the big corporate chains from a few decades ago are really losing it now and may be supplanted by new ones.
 
2 brand new Starbucks just opened 5 mins apart on the West end in the stony plain road area west of 170th. Starbucks seems to have a bit of the Subway business model in them where they will open as many as possible and let the market weed them out.
 
Not very many in the core areas of the city now, maybe they are becoming a more suburban chain and not as upscale.

There is also a new one going into Canon Ridge on the East End. Definitely seems like they are focusing on the suburban model.

Perfectly ok with that, leaves more of the good local shops for those of us who live centrally.

I'm a little too young to remember this but from what I understand, Starbucks used to actually be a real cafe and a somewhat cool place to hang out. Now, like every other fast food chain, the goal is to get as many customers in and coffee out the door as possible with very little seating or amenities.

Back to this project though: for it being a strip mall on Gateway and Calgary Trail, it seems not half bad in terms of design imo. At least there's actual sidewalks, bike parking and some decent landscaping 😭

It's certainly not the worst looking office/retail development I've seen. It's good that the retail along Gateway opens up to both the street and parking lot side. The office building is a nice, modern and attractive design. This development filled in a large, dusty lot that was empty for as long as I can remember. We now only have 1 big glaring, empty lot on Gateway that needs to be filled now (between 71 and 68 avenue north of Home Depot)
