What is that awful looking campus-style building in the foreground? I've always thought it's so damn ugly. Is it military? It feels military.

Isn't the green tower Terrace? I don't mind it so much. I'm referring to that long white C-shaped, five-storey monstrosity. It's gross.

The Terrace Building is curled up in the fetus position because it feels hated and unloved. It is Edmonton's version of the Pentagon with two sides missing. We should ask whomever has a tab on its nascence how it came into being. It does hold a prominent place at the foot of the Legislative Building and most certainly is a contrast in styles. I believe it roughly sits where the final version of Fort Edmonton lost all of its logs. Also "Terrace" -- how did it come by that moniker?

I've always presumed the name came from the site of the building on a bit of a topographical terrace below the Legislative Building...

Yeah that is one heckin fugly building for sure...
Interesting tidbit though: From what I've heard from my dad (who worked for Alberta Legislature for many years), some of the land and decrepit 1930's houses at the bottom of the hill between 97th to 95th ave are actually owned by the legislature, and I guess they are planning to build another park or something in the indefinite future ?

They tore down those homes a couple years ago, but there are still a couple left on the east side of 105 street. The plan was (maybe still is) to redevelop that land into a grand stairway and park of some sort

Ah, my mistake everybody, for some reason I got the Annex and the Terrace building confused. Good grief - it really is like a pseudo-military, Pentagon-style blight on the landscape of our legislative area. No matter how grand a stairway gets installed, or how many heritage homes without designation get razed for new parkland and flower beds, our legislature grounds will never meet its full potential so long as that Terrace thing exists.

It also sticks out like a sore thumb on our skyline when viewed from across the Walterdale bridge, since there are no other structures at the same elevation. A flagrant interruption to our ribbon of green. And it's white. And huge. And ugly.
