Yeah but I don't want my taxes to increase Trudeau Notley Singh alliance socialist liberals.

This was entirely expected when they won ugh. Are we getting any major capital project cash infusion at this rate?

Nope, we need to sacrifice our projects so that Calgary can get their provincial arena-adjacent money lol

We’re getting $20M for a study…..I guess that’s something? lol. Seriously, there must be civic and provincial leaders in this city whose heads are exploding……..like mine.

Nah by the time things are bad enough for them to finally start it (or someone at least semi competent manages to become in charge), the study will be so out of date a new study will need to be conducted lol

There were rumbling the past six months that this project was on life support and that the UCP was "shifting focus" to the Stollery project (which I don't believe will ever see the light of day either).

This is one of those scenarios where people should justifiably go out and protest. Edmonton has doubled its population since our last newly built hospital in 1988. Our current facilities are stretched beyond imagination, many of them are dated and looking like they are out of a second world country (see the Royal Alex ER). What blows my mind is that the planning was really far along with the South Edmonton Hospital and it should not have been too long to get design work ready once they sorted out the pipeline agreement issue.

This announcement has pissed me off more than anything. How people can stand idle while this government throws money at Calgary for their entertainment district and we get money for almost nothing is a crime.

Plus this:

As per CBC: "Faulkner said the foundation hopes to raise up to $250 million from the community to put toward the new hospital." So we have to raise what 1/4 of the price tag to boot?

To be clear, the money that the foundation raises is for 'excellence', not basic construction. Or at least that's the idea.

A direct result of Edmonton's council and their politicizing (which the Premier spoke about yesterday) of so many issues, along with how the city/region voted.

Period.

The demographic of people that are most likely to be hurt by medical service shortages are voting against medical service spending. Sorry to be blunt I guess.

This is mental. Quite the Premier/party rural Alberta elected—really for the people. People will die because you didn't vote for me.

So she's pissed and taking her ball home because she didn't win in Edmonton.

That's great leadership and working for the people right there.

Thanks Marlaina!

I get playing politics this way with sports arenas, public transit projects, and hell even schools to some extent, but for a hospital that is direly needed it's just hard to fathom.

Wait what?! So the UCP didn’t get enough votes so we don’t get a new hospital? You’re joking right? She said that on that f$&ked up Global interview?

I call bull shit, No matter what we as a city and region did or is doing would have gotten this built by this Government. I have been watching the south campus and Stollery get kicked down the field for almost 10 years now. They were talking about both when I stared at Stantec. When the Calgary Campus was getting built we should have had ours started. Hell Red Deer is still not started. They are still in the RFQ stage. And that has been kicked around for 10 or more years as well. RedDeer should have a seperate hospital not an Addition to the current one. 250 mil doesn't get you a lot in Health care these days. From what I had heard earlier this year There was even a location for Stoller picked.

I also call BS on this one. First of all, it is not a municipal responsibility to build hospitals. Second, even when Edmonton did elect a prominent UCP MLA and Cabinet Minister in south west Edmonton, nothing happened here either.

I am willing to bet that $20 million or so for planning is all this government will ever spend on the Stollery and like the South Edmonton Hospital it will languish for years.

Of course, it is not just Edmonton that suffers, communities nearby and northern Alberta rely on Edmonton hospital facilities too. If these facilities continue to become more over crowded because of population growth and lack of new facilities, it will impact much of northern and central Alberta too.
