Edmonton Oilers

I don't see any ego here (and if there is, he's certainly entitled to some). He doesn't owe this organization anything; they've bungled that man's career for a decade, and he's entirely within his rights to take his time or explore options. If his reticence to sign right away is the impetus for the Oilers front office to finally wake tf up, then we're all the better for it.

I believe he will sign an extension, but it hasn't gone the way I once thought it would/hoped for, for the first time I'm having doubts about it.

The Oilers have done a very poor job for most of his career but as it stands right now he cannot join a team thats in a better position for him to win than the one he is currently on. In my opinion he'll sign for 2-4 years for this reason, and if the Oilers don't win the cup in that time period then he will leave which would be understandable at that point.

I have never seen McD eager to partake in PR events where he seems consistently annoyed with the questions being asked (mostly the questions are rhetorical and pointless so they merit disdain, but his responses make him look like he has a chip on his shoulder). He should try to culture a happier disposition. Imagine how many times he is going to get grilled about his outlook towards his own team. There is that but he also has sunk a huge sum of money into his and his better half's design/eatery/bar project -- I can hardly wait for his response when one of the questioners asks him if he no longer has any interest or concern for that or for his wife's business that she has been building up over the last number of years.

Yup.

Peter Pock was looking to get some $$$ from wherever he was traded because he mismanged so much. He sold Gretz basically.

McDavid will walk on his on accord, not due to the team not wanting him to stay.

McDavid wants to win, but just because you're the best player doesn't mean your team is or the place you go to will be and so many factors go into a winning team.

Gretz never won a Stanley Cup after being traded but several of his Edmonton teammates did - and some also won with other teams.

I really hope we can win with McDavid though - he's worked harder than anyone I believe and that says something because athletes at this level work hard.

It's a fair comment that he doesn't enjoy the media/PR stuff. One of the best Oilers for that and genuinely so is Hyman (one of my all-time favorite Oilers). He's almost always smiling and has an easily approachable type of personality.

That said, I think McDavid does a lot of great things for his teammmates and the community at large is well liked and respected. He would just rather not have media around.

Who's getting excited?!!!

Better offence, a harder more D D to play against and a more experienced Skinner = top 4 team?

Add in a 97 who is hyper driven to 'win in Edmonton.

So, I'm not an Oilers fan at all...

But I want Oiler fans opinion on here as my brother, Dad and I had this chat last night.

IF McDavid doesn't want to re-sign here, do you trade and set yourself up for years with all the young NHLers, picks and prospects you can get for him? Or do you keep him here and let him walk at season's end?

^my opinion: 100% trade him. The organization needs to set a deadline and if he doesn't sign or seems intent on testing out free agency they need to explore the trade market. Problem is he has a full no movement clause and can veto any trade. I would hope that if he isn't going to sign here he would do the organization and fans a solid favor and give management a list of 2,3,6 (whatever) teams that he would accept a trade to. Getting four or five (maybe more) "assets" could set the team up for another decade, if they use those assets wisely. All three members of the "Kid Line" (Adam Graves, Joe Murphy, Martin Gelinas) were instrumental in helping the Oil win the 1990 Stanley Cup and all three came from the Gretzky trade/sale: Gelinas directly from LA and Graves/Murphy from the Jimmy Carson trade to Detroit (with Carson coming directly from LA in the trade). I just don't think we can afford to let 97 "Marner" us. (I absolutely love that new term, by the way.)

Realistically you would want to trade him if he won't re-sign but it's a difficult equation for us. McDavid with a full NMC gets to pick where he goes giving a smaller number of teams a massive amount of leverage, and he also has to be willing to sign an extension with those teams otherwise the value won't be nearly as much as we hope. One playoff run and a slim chance of him changing his mind could be worth more than what you get back in that trade unfortunately. However if we can make a deal work with an extension in place the value we get back we should take.

For my money McDavid will re-sign, and unless we start the season very poorly I don't think he ever requests a trade, worst case scenario he might want to take a last shot with Edmonton and then test Free Agency. Don't forget a NMC allows him to stay in Edmonton even if the team provides him a hard deadline, lets hope it never gets to that point.
