Edmonton Oilers

Into Q2 of the season now.
Oilers off season trades and player loses are notable.

After McDavid and Draisaitl, McLeod (6) Foegele (6) and Holloway (6) would all be #3 in goal scoring on the Oilers (tied with Bouchard) - well ahead of Skinner, Arvidsson, Hyman, RNH and everybody else.

Broberg was injured after 12 games, and already had 9 points (also a team leading +6). Holloway is 2nd on the Blues with +4.

NUUUUUUGGGGEEEE! Hopefully that fires him up a bit.

The Avs will be a good one tonight and interesting test for the Oil.

I disagree. That game last night was a battle, there was nothing boring about it. No one could take a shift off - it's exactly the kind of game you expect in the playoffs.

As for the goal - Skinner was playing the pass across where the puck was going before it came back to the passer. A bit of a fluke, really, but I don't blame him on that one.

^^

I'm not sure what game you were watching IanO.

I'm not typically a fan of low-scoring games as they're too often "kitty bar the door" snooze-fests with the game played on clogged up ice between the blue lines.

Last night's third period with the Oilers down a goal and owning the ice in the Golden Knights end of the rink was about as good as gets for on the edge of your seat watching.

As for the lone goal that was scored, that was pure puck luck and not something that Skinner - who was named the game's second star - could be faulted on.

You betcha, but some of those CAN selections are real head-scratchers: Parayko-who? Jarvis? Toews - by far the most over rated D man to ever live on this planet, especially on a defence with what, the 3rd worst goals against?

Jarvis is a hell of a player.

I'm hearing that Evan Bouchard may play for Canada in the 4 Nations Cup if any of the Canadian defensemen are injured.

Canada and USA are literally throwing the tournament at this point, the Canadian defense choices are... puzzling to say the least.

Pietrangelo is not the defenseman he once was, Sanheim has gone from being one of the more underrated defenseman in the league to one of the more overrated in the span of a couple seasons, a good top 4 guy, but far from the best option for a loaded team Canada. Parayko is by far the worst offender, love that he's from St Albert and an Edmonton area guy but he's about the 60th guy I would have chosen, he's barely a top 4 guy anymore.

Meanwhile, Bouchard, Dobson and Weegar were all not selected. You should always go with best player available imo, but even if Canada was looking for a grittier, defensive guy (which it seems like they were based on the Parayko selection), Weegar is a far better option for that type of play.

For forwards, Canada chose to bring Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel who aren't bad players by any means but they left Robert Thomas and Nick Suzuki out, two of the better 2 way centres Canada has. Also, despite a bit of a tough start to the season I'm disappointed Zach Hyman wasn't selected, he's been on and off of injury all year and over the course of the past couple seasons has been one of the better goal scoring, forechecking wingers in the league who has great chemistry with McDavid.

All time sell job by Canada, if they manage to win it will be in spite of these selections and unfortunate snubs.

For USA, they aren't quite as bad but the decision to include players like Brock Nelson, Chris Kreider and Vincent Trochek while Cole Cauffield (tied for 3rd in goals right now) sits out is bizarre. Noah Hanifin is an odd inclusion with some of the other options available.

Overall, as you can probably tell I'm pretty disappointed in some of the selections and snubs. One thing that is maybe good is that I thought Canada and USA were going to thump Sweden and Finland and this might make things a bit closer, which hopefully will make the tournament more exciting. The Sweden and Finland rosters are pretty expected and well chosen, though I do think Sweden should have tried to find a spot for William Eklund, who is having a great year despite playing on a terrible Sharks squad.
