We were 2/3 of the way up and paid ~$220USD/per. In Edmonton these would be ~$150-175Cdn.

Agreed. It was fun to watch from the arena.
As to your second point, Woodcroft said something in his interview, before the game: these non-playoff teams are playing on free-flow right now, no fear, nothing to lose and going all in. This makes them dangerous.
You couple that with the weird and annoying mindset that we seem to have, where we play at Stanley Cup contender levels agains Cup contenders, and Beddard trophy level agains the bottom of the league.
