I actually think that bridge looks pretty cool... and a nice landmark for that part of town. On the flip side, I can also see how people might hate it as well.

Alstom was hired in the spring to design and install the alternative to the Thales CBTC signalling system.

The alternative uses a signalling technology called fixed-block.

A fixed-block system has been used on the Capital Line since it opened. It controls trains based on sections of track called blocks. Each block is protected by signals that prevent a train from entering an occupied block.

Alstom is extending the fixed-block signalling system onto the Metro Line. This system will offer a reliable service without needing manual interventions like slower speeds, which is currently necessary with the incomplete Thales signalling system.

The City has found a way to tighten up train spacing using this tested technology so Metro Line trains can share the same tracks with Capital Line trains downtown.

The new rainbow crosswalk along 104 Ave downtown does important work, helping pedestrians safely get to the other side of 109 St on the MacEwan University campus. It also does vital City Plan work.

I’m guessing that this is part of the signalling overhaul to let LRT drivers know the gates are working properly. I could see this being future proof for when they want to remove the gates all together.

The sound barrier rebuild along the south section of St Al trail is moving 3 meters further east. Into the old easement area that gave people a larger yard. That move will allow the LRT to be placed along that right of way..

Metro NW update: construction starts this summer The Metro Line NW has reached a significant milestone as we have selected a Construction Manager to deliver the first phase of the project. In March, the City selected PCL Construction to deliver the 1.6-km expansion from NAIT to Blatchford. With the agreement finalized, PCL has started providing pre-construction services and the project is on track to start construction this summer. The Request for Proposals (RFP) to provide construction management services for the Metro Line was issued on September 26, 2019 and closed on October 30, 2019. Three shortlisted teams submitted proposals during this phase. The City selected PCL Construction after carefully reviewing and evaluating the submissions based on rigorous criteria. The Metro Line NW Phase 1 extension includes two LRT stations: -NAIT/Blatchford Market Station situated at the heart of Blatchford Town Centre and the NAIT campus redevelopment -Blatchford Gate Station in northeast Blatchford Construction preparations will start this spring, including: Detailed design Relocating utilities Reconfiguring 109 St between Princess Elizabeth Ave and 118 Ave The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve and many businesses and industries are feeling its effect. We also recognize the current market conditions and labour force availability are challenging and some projects may experience schedule impacts. We are continuing to work with all of our industry partners to understand those impacts and address them accordingly. We continue to monitor this situation and take our direction from Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. These are challenging times; we are committed to working with our industry partners to address this challenge together.
