Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

Cargo wrap up 2022

Interesting:
"Building out the air cargo network with increased frequency from carriers like DHL and FedEx, the launch of nonstop service to Frankfurt (a major cargo hub for Europe), and the upcoming regional cargo service to the North will help drive growth too, Tharakan said."

A lot of flight cancelations across the country from Westjet in the last day (again) that doesn't seem to be as evident with any of the other carriers right now and beyond just weather - such as passenger volume, staffing issues and aircraft maintenance.

And of course the airline is impossible to get answers from. Some people are being told not to expect rebookings until Boxing Day. Yikes!

"It's just frustrating that WestJet are not being held accountable, or at least not giving the passengers a just reason as to why they were cancelled and a just reason as to why they cannot accommodate them to their destination. It's frustrating."

CBC News has contacted WestJet for clarity and comment on the situation.

"WestJet needs to stand up to the plate," she said. "They still have no answers. And I don't know how WestJet can get away with this."

As we heard from calgaryplanes:

"YYC-BCN has not yet operated, it starts next year. Yes correct, CDG, DUB and FCO all have YVR as #1 fairly consistently but #2 varies based on the day and the flight. YEG is often near the top, but YYJ is surprisingly high, FCO has had a day when YLW was #1, always lots of bodies from YQR and YXE, etc... no real surprises. An interesting (or perhaps obvious) thing is that you can see the impact of KL's nonstop YEG-AMS, because on the days it doesn't fly, there are more YEG originators on WS' Europe flights from YYC. YVR-LGW is being cut next year, so YVR originators will climb on YYC-LHR and YYC-LGW next year but of course many will (and should) instead choose nonstop options from YVR to London. I'm very curious to see how many originate in YEG for YYC-NRT. It will easily be #1. There are other routes that have YEG consistently as the #1 originator, like YYC-BNA for example."

The what is going on is AC is strengthening its YVR in particular, YYZ, YUL hubs and reducing and cancelling flights to/from YYC from some large secondary cities like Victoria, Regina, Saskatoon as I mentioned 2 pages up. Folks in Saskatchewan and BC that want to fly AC (Aeroplan) will need to connect in AC YVR or YYZ to fly to LHR or FRA . Which means AC current service out of YYC to LHR and FRA is being weakened by cutting feed for these routes ... maybe setting the stage to withdraw the service at YYC. The only feed left from YEG is the 4 daily AC Jazz flights from YEG to YYC on props - if you can stand the noise. Now if you want to connect through YYC to get to FRA, AC has raised the prices to fly from YYC. It's faster and MUCH less expensive to fly through YYZ or YVR to connect to FRA as you can see here: https://www.aircanada.com/us/en/aco/home/app.html#/faredriven which was to depart YEG for FRA on 04 January and return 20 January.

I would not be surprised to see AC remove the 4 daily flights - and it would be a good thing for Edmonton. AC will protect its 3 main hubs and offer attractive pricing and I have no problem connecting in YVR or YYZ. Those that want to pay premium prices can fly or drive to Calgary to get the Westjet flights.
To clarify, those originator numbers I was talking about are for the WestJet flights, not AC. YVR is never the #1 orginating for AC's Europe flights, and very little of it comes from YEG either - there is understandably much more local feed given the lack of inbound connections.

If WestJet pulled YYC-YYJ/YLW/YXE/YQR their Europe flights from YYC would eventually crumble which I'm sure is music to your ears, but the AC Europe flights carry a significantly higher ratio of local YYC pax.

Hmmm 🤔🙃
As noted a few posts above - beyond weather Westjet was giving multiple reasons to passengers - maintenance issues, staffing issues, passenger volume - at least according to the CBC article that was posted above.

Well this is not just only a WestJet problem in Canada.

Flair Airlines & Air Canada has had its fair share of cancellations & delayed flights the last couple of days too.

Unclear but seeing a lot of outright cancellations, not just delays.

Yes, BC had some bad weather since Monday https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6690803

Toronto area expecting a Snowstorm later this week, that could effect passengers in Canada during the busiest Christmas travel season & at Toronto Pearson YYZ Canada’s busiest airport ✈️.

One Westjet flight from Edmonton to Winnipeg was cancelled after everyone was on board and the pilot announced that he and the Crew were exhausted and was not going to fly. Good thing they didn't fly but concerning.

Westjet has had 160+ flights cancelled last two days for various reasons but they are only commenting on those flights cancelled by weather. A lot of people in limbo without answers.

Was on Global News tonight.

Mostly weather, but also a cascading effect of no ground crews, timed out flight crews, out of positon aircraft, etc. WestJet has handled all of this terribly.

To be, Flair is also in disaster mode and AC is also having a rough go, but their Alberta operations are much smaller so it's less of a headline.

When you zoom in on YVR on a flight tracker and there's a lineup 20 deep of planes waiting to deice... not much the airlines can do

Good points, currently Vancouver YVR in Western Canada is experiencing delays up to 1hour & 30 minutes this Tuesday December 20th morning according to FlightAware tracking website & also included few late night YVR to Asia/Australia/Mexico international flights are delayed up to 2hours due to the snowy weather /low visibility.

Plus some late night flight arrivals for Monday December 19 are still waiting for gates to park at YVR & running low on fuel too.too.

Weather does effect things for all airports/ flights.
