Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

Westjet fleet has to be getting a little strung out with the swoop planes still rotating through for cabin upgrades. Good timing for porter as summer schedules were locked down quite a while ago so Westjet would be making a late change. Would be nice to see this one start a little earlier - mid June would be great, but will see what sort of traffic it can attract.
True . Correction the *new* Porter Airlines route Edmonton YEG to Hamilton YHM starts on June 11 & operates to end of November 2025 for (S25)

It's an interesting move. So many airlines have tried to make a go of it out of Hamilton, yet nothing ever seems to have stuck in the long term.

Can I ask what is the purpose of a Hamilton route? Is it necessary from Edmonton to have a Hamilton flight for Porter, wouldn't there be other flights that would have increased ridership especially from Edmonton such as increased frequency to Ottawa or Montreal?

New summer seasonal destination with determination where Porter has made the decision to try and put multiple flights into a airport that should serve a catchment area of 1 million+ people on the Hamilton side. Issue is no connections on either end but Summer seasonal between two large domestic markets with no competition seems like a worthwhile venture. Porter would be a well known commodity on the YHM side and is likely becoming so on the YEG side as this will be the 4th Porter destination for YEG.

I'm just guessing, but I think Hamilton is a secondary airport that can serve as a spillover from YYZ, or maybe an alternative that is cheaper, less crowded, and limited to certain flights. I'm guessing It's the same deal as the Abbotsford airport and YVR.

It taps into additional markets in Southern Ontario, gives people in the GTA an alternative airport to fly from, and the big one: YVR-YHM and YEG-YHM are intentionally timed for connections to YHZ.

Geez, I should wish for things more often. Wished for it to start earlier and poof, there we go!

I wonder what kind of impacts the current political climate with Trump and his desire to make Canada the 51st state and his ongoing criticisms of us are going to impact flights to US cities.

People are consciously looking to support Canadian products. And the same may be true with travel choices.

Even if 1 or 2 out 10 that were going to book a flight to Chicago from YEG for example decide nah, I'm not going to spend money in the US. Or another factor is if tariffs do get implemented and our dollar drops a lot, the affordability to go there drops as well.

Are the flights we've worked hard to secure as a city less successful because people are disgusted by Trump?

I think there’s a risk for sure, the dollar may be one of the biggest risks. I’m down int the states right now (by necessity) and it is so expensive here now, basically everything costs what it does back home but it’s in USD.

Curious if these tariff talks will impact future schedule planning and an expected pullback of US flights?

Anecdotal of course, but I already know a few people in my circle of family/friends who have cancelled their US plans this year and are planning trips in Canada/abroad this year. I have a feeling the backlash won’t die down until the tarrifs threat is gone completely.

It goes beyond travel for pleasure. We just lost a client this morning who is rejigging their entire business and pivoting away from the US. Just not a reliable trade partner now and I think we will see a permanent shift, with less travel south for both business and pleasure. We were planning to send quite a few staff down to various conferences this year, and we will be cancelling those trips unless absolutely essential.

I also know or have recently heard of several people selling vacation properties in various parts of the southern US, so they also will not be traveling there regularly any more.
