Almost identical to three weeks ago, but I took the pictures so I might as well post them.

It may not be required in the city bylaws, but it would be good practice if developers had to protect the trees on both sides of the street during development. During this Westrich project, two trees have been impacted. This one that just got removed had a pretty good wedge into it as a result of construction. The other will be ok, but it would help if they had protection.

Prior to construction you have to provide an arborist report for the development, including a tree protection plan that is quite comprehensive and commit to a lot of requirements by the City.
 
If a City boulevard tree was damaged by a contractor then there would usually be compensation owed to the City for said tree, depending on what the trees value is assessed to be. This can often be several to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the tree.

Whatever the penalties are, they aren’t high enough. 50+ year old trees need to be valued even more than something like 30k. Such a shame.
 
If a tree is damaged or diseased to city will have the contractor take it out as part of the plan if they can't be salvaged. I was asking about this on a project, when we were taking out some trees.

I realize that in construction things can happen despite best efforts, so I am not going to jump all over them for this. However, the company does need to be responsible, I agree with compensation being required and feel perhaps it should be even higher.
 
The penalty should be paid in leaves instead of dollars. A felled tree needs to be replaced by two trees in the highest tree-farm category of caliper dimension equal to or greater than the felled tree. Sometimes a little prescribed pain oddly leads to far greater care of existing infrastructure. If it is determined to be a malicious act that killed the tree, then the apprehended culprit would be tarred and leaved and served up as a salad course to a Papua New Guinea cannibal tribe.
