I've heard they're reasonably close

I'm starting to wonder if their rebrand was due to Oilers Entertainment Group dropping a 'cease and desist', because it doesn't seem to have been part of any strategy to do anything better.
My theory is that there is more than 1 owner ("business partners") and one of them wanted to go with "Slapshot" and the other wanted to go with "Tap Room". The Slapshot guy won, and then when business was bad, the "Tap Room" guy convinced his business partner that a "rebrand" was needed 🤣 Instead of recognizing it was them, they figured it had to be the name.

My question is, who the hell owns this property and rented it to these guys? How can someone with such little business acumen end up owning a prime property like this. These guys must have been willing to sign some crazy ass lease for the landlord to be willing to rent it to them. Probably no leasehold improvements, above market rent and (I would hope) a hefty upfront amount of months rent in advance.

I assume given the amount of vacant commercial/retail space nearby downtown, the landlord was happy to fill it and not get into extensive details about the tenants plans.

Thanks for reminding me @IanO

I have heard from someone reliable that we should expect to be drinking beers in O'Byrne's next month.

Don't forget about Boxer's sister restaurant undergoing tenant improvements in the north CRU of HSBC Place. That one should be expected January/February. They'll be serving coffee during the day per their lease, like Dalla does.

This is a cool video on Detroit. I've found watching their redevelopment super fascinating. Lots that doesn't translate due to history/context. But some good lessons still for sure.

A big takeaway, there's real friendship/partnership between the mayor and police chief, and in general a sense of momentum and optimism amongst all the city builders. We're no where close to the problems detroit had, but I wish we could experience some of their momentum to turn things around and get everyone pulling in the same direction again.

Most powerful quote by the mayor: "I've taken the us vs them politics out of the city"

We have seen this so much at all levels here in Canada but city politicians could really benefit from chatting with Mayor Duggan in Detroit and exchange ideas. They have a long ways to go but that video highlights their progress nicely.

There is so much I have to say regarding this video. Maybe you have to hit rock bottom for everyone to pull together. But I really hope we don't have to follow this path and smarten up before then.

Sadly we don't much leadership from our business community now and unfortunately not many large local corporate offices downtown, mostly just branches of corporations from elsewhere. Perhaps that is why the people there don't seem very invested in our downtown, frankly just mostly seem to grumble and not put forward practical solutions. I say all this as someone in the small business community working downtown.

The relationship between our police and city administration is bad and there is no strong advocate for downtown on our city council now, not even the councillor who currently represents the area.

On a brighter note, our problems are no where near as bad as Detroit, we seem to trying to be deal with abandoned buildings and our economy is arguably growing, although oddly looking at downtown you wouldn't think this was the case at all. Our crime and safety issues while not as bad, haven't been adequately addressed quickly enough and what has been done is very reactive, so negative perceptions have started to take hold and hurt downtown.

One of the few similarities with Detroit is we have the advantage of affordability compared to other places. It takes a mayor with vision, which they had, to turn things around and that is one thing we desperately need now to bring everyone together and make improving our downtown more of a priority.
