Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Edmonton

Directness is good, but directly connecting to major destinations like option 3 would likely drive more ridership.
My thoughts are that the Metro Line already serves all of the areas along the Option 3 route, thus kind of duplicating service. I'm leaning towards Option 2 as it is the most direct and would likely be the most reliable. I just want that 118 Avenue traffic circle reconfigured, as Options 1 and 3 both state it would be, but not Option 2.

But the metro line doesn't go further north than Nait and won't for a long time, and when it does it won't serve the same areas as this BRT line. So if anything, having the two lines share a few blocks is actually way better for connectivity.

Not really, since Metro Line has a bunch of grade crossings that buses will be stuck waiting at.

For Options 1 and 2, the bus stops at 111 / 118 will service Royal Alex and NAIT respectively, so it's not like any major destinations are being missed. Any connections missed by not stopping at Kingsway can be made downtown instead.

I like Option 2 mostly because the less roads they have to tear up, the better. Besides, the reconfigured traffic circle in 1 is horrendous -- 4 new sets of lights?! Yeesh.

Issue with Option 2 is the section that goes from 97 St to 101 St on 111 Ave. That's a nightmare already, and having to cross that many lanes to hit the turn lanes seems daunting even with bus priority signals.

I wonder if they could have the BRT route go across 111 Ave, and then connect to 101 St via 110A Ave?

I wonder if there should be a separate signal for 97. Street—111 Avenue-101 Street (perhaps something similar to 83 Street/87 Avenue with the LRT crossing the intersection).

Option 1 has traffic lights in the 101 St/118 Ave roundabout - whoever came up with that lame idea should be shot.
Option 3 has replaced the 101 St/118 Ave roundabout with traffic lights - also a bad idea.
I'll go with Option 2 but under the provision that they make a few improvements to the 101 St/118 Ave roundabout.

110A Avenue is brilliant. Could remove one side of parking and then you would have space for buses both ways. Add traffic lights at 101st and 97th St with a bus advance (so the light is only on as long as a bus needs it) and it would likely be much quicker and avoid the mess at 111th Avenue.

The only concern I could see is that 97 St is quite narrow between 111 & 110A, might be a squeeze to fit everything in, depending on just how separated these BRT systems are envisioned to be.

Yeah it narrows to 4 lanes without a centre median, but the COE could potentially expropriate some of Park Memorial's parking lot if they needed any additional width I imagine.

The funeral home itself sometimes creates traffic issues if there's a funeral procession, but I guess there's no getting around that.
