Blatchford

Streetside started on the last of their rowhomes by Airport Road. One of the units was sold a month or two ago.

What did everyone think of Mandel's gripes about Blatchford? Listening to his interview with Jespersen, he had some fairly strong feelings on the topic.

I do think we should have turned Blatchford, the Quarters and the Exhibition Lands over to a municipal development corporation ages ago.

I like and respect Stephen Mandel, but in that interview he resembled Abe Simpson yelling at clouds.
Yeah, it was a very irritating interview. When he rhetoricaly asked "why didn't they start along Kingsway, instead of at the other end in the middle of nowhere??" I just about screamed at my computer "YOU voted in favour of their plan! Why didn't you ask them??" They started by airport road because it gave them easy access to existing utilities, which lowered the initial development costs. It must be nice to be a former politician and blame current politicians for the consequences of your decisions.

I haven't watched the interview and do not plan to. But they are now working on work in the Blatchford Market area, along Princess Elizabeth first, right across from the mall. So these complaints that they should have started there seem like a way for him to just be able to say "see I told you so" in a few years about something that is already happening.

For me, he seemed to be channeling what a lot of Edmontonians are thinking currently. His point about the location of development of Blatchford is correct, it does make it look less developed and appealing than it is.

Perhaps it would have cost more money to do it that way, but private companies understand more money spent on marketing and promotion can be worthwhile. I am not sure bureaucrats get this, but hey what does the former mayor know about development, surely our city administration and planners are smarter than council, the voters, him and everyone else as they constantly seem to keep telling us they know best and ignoring or dismissing conflicting views.

Will this be like a community league hall for Blatchford?

Any indication when that giant hill in Blatchford will begin development? Certainly there is a lot more excavation to happen in the neighbourhood, but wondering if a timeline is in place. Griesbach did a nice job with their hill featuring a well built stairway and paths to the top along with a huge community gardens at the base. It's a popular ammenity.

The project's main scope involves largely preserving the Aircraft Control Tower while significantly renovating the adjacent Annex building. The Annex will be transformed into a community gathering space with public restrooms, and the exterior spaces will be integrated with public realm improvements. Mechanical and electrical systems will be updated, including connecting the building HVAC to the district energy system (DESS). The project aims to demonstrate net-zero sustainable principles through adaptive reuse, on-site power generation via a photo voltaic array, and DESS integration.
