ATB Place - Redevelopment

ATB is in the south tower, they were subleasing the space from TELUS. Alberta Health is in the north tower. I realize ATB has their name on the north tower but they have always been located in the south tower.

TELUS sold the buildings in the early 2000's and then signed a 25 year lease which is now up. Whatever TELUS branding or anything else you see is just leftover from when they were in the building. All TELUS employee's mostly WFH with some being located at the TOLL building on RHW and some others at TELUS Park in the westend.

Taken from the south tower at lunch time today

I worked in that building for almost 30 years (and now WFH), I'll let you guess for which company. I promise you if you searched all 33 floors in the building you will not find a TELUS employee.

I guess they have the courage to innovate, but not the courage to say goodbye lol

So sad how the Telecommunications of Edmonton and Alberta ended up getting sold and eaten up. I still remember the days of AGT and Edtel.
Agreed. My dad used to work in the Telus building back in the day when it was AGT. The building was full of Telus, and I think the smaller one next to it also had Telus people, plus employees in some other buildings around the city. Edtel of course had their building and there was also Shaw based in Edmonton. Edmonton was a real hub of telecom activity.
Sometime in the early 90's Telus started to shift focus to Calgary. AGT mobility was started in Calgary, as well as AGT advanced communications and jobs started to flow that way. My dad's job got moved to Calgary around that time. Edtel was absorbed by Telus.. Shaw also moved sometime in the 90's. Once Telus merged with BCTel, the focus of Telus started shifting to Vancouver, or overseas, moving jobs from both Calgary and Edmonton. Our family ended up moving to Van for a few years. My dad's long been retired now, but from what he's heard there isn't much left of Telus in Edmonton. Is this the case?
Also Rogers has taken over Shaw now so I'm sure they'll move jobs to Toronto or overseas.

^ Those were the days. Head offices for Shaw, Telus and EDTel all in Edmonton likely providing several thousand good jobs. We were a telecom hub, as you stated. Now? Those thousands of jobs are likely down do a few hundred? What a huge loss
Yeah, most of those jobs went overseas to India, Bangladesh et al....but alas, those jobs are all coming back! You just have to move to YYC to get those coveted "Fintech" jobs....lol

There are roughly 12,000 fintech jobs in Calgary, which is nothing to sneeze at. That's more than all the previous Telcos put together had when they were headquartered in Edmonton, so yes, you are correct.

Respectfully, 12,000 is a small number out of Calgary's overall labour force, which is probably around a million people give or take.

I agree. It's not near the level of jobs that could step in and replace oil and gas for example. My response to the original post was more or less saying that 12,000 jobs isn't something to overlook, It's roughly the same amount of employees as the UofA has or the level that Nortel was at in the Ottawa area back in its heyday. The positive side, is it's spread across 150 -200 companies rather than one company like Nortel.
