Amazon in Edmonton

Mayor says Edmonton a stronger candidate for Amazon office than Calgary
The province may not be picking favourites between Calgary and Edmonton when it comes to bidding on Amazon's new headquarters, but Mayor Don Iveson said he believes the city has the advantage.

He told media Tuesday that he belives the city's talent could have long-term appeal for the mega retailer.

“When you think about the University of Alberta, NAIT, MacEwan, Norquest, like we can crank out those 50,000 people over the next decade to meet their labour needs,” he said.

When the Seattle-based company announced it was opening a second headquarters in North America, it sparked interest from major cities across the continent.

According to their website, they expect to invest over $5 million in construction and will include 50,000 high-paying jobs.

The province announced Monday it has assembled a team of experts to help make the cities case.

But Iveson said even if Calgary offers financial incentives to sweeten the deal, Edmonton will not.

He said Calgary used tax breaks to attract several head offices in the 80s, but said many of those offices now sit empty.

“The sustainable approach is to bring talent and build infrastructure to support a company in its growth,” he said. "Companies will hop from low cost to low cost that's not good for your city in the long run.”

Amazon headquarters would ‘fundamentally alter’ potential Canadian city candidates
VANCOUVER – It’s like a technology-themed reality TV dating show.

Suitor Amazon is on the hunt for a North American city to house what it calls HQ2: a second headquarters. The ideal match will tick off most of a wide-ranging list of requirements that covers practical matters, like available buildings and green space, as well as a certain ‘je ne said quoi’ that, for example, helps it attract tech talent.

Many Canadian cities consider Amazon a catch. After all, the tech titan is promising up to 50,000 high paying jobs and a US$5-billion investment. Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Ottawa, Edmonton and Calgary have all promised to submit proposals by Thursday, the deadline for those looking to woo the firm into their regions.

But while the possibility of a Canadian city turning into the next Seattle – Amazon’s existing home – is tempting, experts say it’s a risky proposition that comes with some drawbacks, like making operations more challenging for local technology companies.

“An investment this large would fundamentally alter a town,” said Dan Shaw, a lecturer at Dalhousie University’s Rowe School of Business in Halifax.

Other businesses, including local startups, that employ highly-skilled technology workers may struggle to compete, he said.

A company may have relied on hiring new graduates from the local university for starting salaries of $60,000, Shaw explained, but Amazon has deep pockets and could push the bar for salaries higher by offering closer to $90,000 for entry-level jobs.

Edmonton submits proposal to house new Amazon headquarters
Edmonton is officially in the running to become home to Amazon’s next headquarters.

Brad Ferguson, president of the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, said the EEDC had formally submitted its application ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

“Today we submitted our proposal for Amazon’s second headquarters (HQ2),” Ferguson said in a statement on Twitter.

While he didn’t share details of the proposal — or what, if any, incitements were offered to Amazon — Ferguson did say the bid was a team effort.

“Leaders from our business, government, non-profit and post secondary communities came together over the past four weeks in a joint effort to tell Edmonton’s story.”

“We are extremely proud of how this team approach differentiates Edmonton from our competitors, and we believe this is exactly what Amazon requires to be successful.

'In it to win it': Edmonton puts in bid for new Amazon headquarters
On Thursday, Edmonton officially submitted it's argument for why the city should be chosen as the location for Amazon's second North American headquarters.

The new facility has been a high-tech hot ticket item for cities across the continent ever since the tech company announced it.

If Edmonton does win, it would mean 50,000 high-paying jobs and a US $5-billion investment.

“Over the last four weeks, public sector, private sector, nonprofit and post secondary leaders have come together to tell Edmonton's story in a way that we believe highlight the competitive advantages of doing business here in Edmonton,” said Adam Sweet, chief of staff for the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation.

He said they could not release details of the bid, but added that with six post-secondary institutions and a community where “we are open, we are inventive, we are courageous and cooperative,” Edmonton stands a good chance.

“We, as a city, are in it to win it,” he said.

Calgary's odds to land Amazon HQ2 improve while Edmonton still 'dark horse'
The bidding war between North American cities vying for Amazon's second headquarters continues — and while one Alberta city is a long shot, another is quickly moving up in the rankings.

Edmonton's odds of landing the marketplace juggernaut's business are 100 to 1, while Calgary's odds are now 18 to 1 — a dramatic increase from the 66 to 1 it was initially ranked at.

The odds are made by Irish betting company Paddy Power, which is known for taking bets on unusual events.

...

Price said Edmonton's odds remain low mostly because no one knows what incentives they've offered Amazon to coax them north of the border.

"You guys haven't really offered to say anything. It's very secretive there," Price said.

But that might actually work to the advantage of those putting money on Alberta's capital.

"I think it makes you dark horses because no one knows what you've offered," he said. But, Price said, it's perhaps just he who thinks that.

"Maybe it's worth betting on you guys, but no one has yet."

Toronto only Canadian city shortlisted for Amazon HQ2
Amazon has announced its shortlist for its second headquarters and Toronto is the only Canadian city to make the cut.

Last September, Amazon said it would build a second headquarters in North America with a price tag of nearly $5 billion, and potentially hire 50,000 people to fill high-paying jobs.

Amazon said it received proposals from 238 cities, including Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax and Vancouver, and have narrowed it down to 20.

The online retail giant said it would work with each candidate city over the next few months to dive deeper into the feasibility of each host area and plans to make a final decision sometime this year.

“Thank you to all 238 communities that submitted proposals. Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough – all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity,” Amazon spokesperson Holly Sullivan said in a statement. “Through this process we learned about many new communities across North America that we will consider as locations for future infrastructure investment and job creation.”

Sorry Edmonton. Toronto only Canadian city on Amazon HQ shortlist.
Toronto is the only Canadian city on Amazon Inc.’s short list of 20 candidates for a second North American headquarters.

Edmonton had bid on the new headquarters.

The e-commerce giant received 238 applications for the opportunity and says narrowing it down to 20 was very tough.

The other 19 locations it will consider are all in the U.S. and include New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver and Nashville.

Amazon says it plans to choose the location later this year after diving deeper into the proposals from its top cities.

An Amazon spokesperson says the process taught the company about several new communities across North America that it will consider as locations for future infrastructure investment and job creation.

Amazon Announces New Fulfillment Centre in Edmonton Metro Region
Amazon currently employs more than 1,500 in Alberta; new facility will create an additional 600 full-time jobs in Leduc County

SEATTLE, Dec. 17, 2018 /CNW/ - Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced plans for a new fulfillment centre in Leduc County, creating more than 600 full-time jobs with opportunities for career training and development by 2020. The 1-million-square-foot customer fulfillment facility will be Amazon's second in Alberta, where it currently employs more than 1,500 full-time associates in Rocky View County.

"Our ability to create over 600 good-paying jobs with great benefits is thanks to the network of support we've received and the skilled workforce in the region," said Glenn Sommerville, Director of Amazon Operations in Canada. "We're grateful for the welcome we've received from government and community leaders and excited by our growth in Alberta and ability to better serve our customers."

Once open, the new facility will be Amazon's 11th fulfillment facility in Canada and joins Amazon's current fulfillment centres in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.

"We are working hard to encourage investment, diversification and the creation of more good jobs in Alberta," said Alberta Premier Rachel Notley. "Today's announcement by Amazon means hundreds of jobs and more opportunities are on their way, helping to make life better for more Alberta workers and families. I want to congratulate Amazon for once again investing in Alberta and thank everyone who helped to make this investment possible."

Associates at the more than 1,000,000-square-foot facility will pick, pack and ship larger customer items such as outdoor equipment, patio furniture and bicycles. Full-time employees at Amazon receive competitive hourly wages, medical, vision and dental coverage, RRSP contribution matching, stock awards, and performance-based bonuses starting on day one.

"This announcement by Amazon is another vote of confidence in the Edmonton region as an economic hub in Alberta," said Amarjeet Sohi, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods and Minister of Natural Resources. "The new centre will spark economic activity and create good-paying jobs in our region. I look forward to construction beginning next year."

Amazon also offers employees access to innovative programs like Career Choice, where it will pay up to 95 percent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. Since the program's launch, more than 16,000 employees across the globe have pursued degrees in game design and visual communications, nursing, IT programming and radiology, to name a few.

"It is an absolute pleasure to welcome Amazon to our community," says Tanni Doblanko, Mayor of Leduc County. "We couldn't be more proud that Amazon has selected Leduc County as the location of its newest fulfillment centre in Canada. Amazon's expansion will create well-paying, stable jobs for our citizens and help diversify and strengthen our local economy, the long-term sustainability of our region and our community-at-large. Leduc County is an ideal location for world-class businesses to set up or expand their operations, as evidenced by the fact Fortune 500 companies such as Amazon want to invest here."

"We welcome Amazon's expansion into the Edmonton Metro region," said Don Iveson, Mayor of Edmonton. "This expansion will create more local jobs and contribute to our regional economic prosperity."

The project is being developed by ONE Properties and TD Greystone Asset Management.

I have been doing some research on the "Amazon Effect". Studies suggest that while there fulfillment centre will add 600 jobs, they will kill close to 10 times that amount in closed retail outlets (mom & pop mainly, but also big-box stores... over 10,000 stores to close in the U.S. and Canada in 2019). So why should Edmonton area be any different trend-wise?!!

Wow this thing will have a massive footprint! It's nearly the size of Ellerslie!
@archited I think that in the end, the addition of this to the region will be a "net positive". I do agree that some other jobs may suffer as Amazon becomes more convenient, but this will strengthen the region as a whole.

This won't be a normal regional distribution centre, feeding 1 day and 2 day delivery (bet that will still be from Calgary's?). It sounds like a half country or country wide centre for large, heavy items.
