$103M to Calgary's Arts Commons from the AB gov't. Announced earlier today. Add this to the $300M + for their new "Events Center". And treatment of the two large cities in the province by its government gets even more lopsided.

In news about Contentment Social Services:
“Jason Nixon, minister of seniors, community and social services, as well as ministry staff, have been present at one of the Leduc hotels where the non-profit has housed people, Smith said, and the outstanding bill was put on a credit card.”
“"If the minister hadn't been on site yesterday, and hadn't intervened that way, I shudder to think what would have happened to those poor folks," Smith said at an unrelated news conference in Calgary Friday.”
“Premier Smith said Friday the government plans to change its approach to ensure organizations have their accreditation checked.”
Based on the Premier’s praise for his actions, one would think it was the Minister’s personal credit card!
As for the new approach to ensure organizations “have their accreditation checked”, what does that even mean? Shouldn’t it be the actual accommodation being checked?

Unbelievable.
Just a few weeks ago in the 2024 provincial budget announcement, the province allocated "$7.8 million toward the Olympic Plaza/Arts Commons transformation project."
And now a few weeks later that has been inflated to $103 million. Where did this money come from? And the UCP still refuses to pay Edmonton the $60 million it owes us in lieu of property taxes dating back to 2019. Nor will if fund Coliseum demolition but they're going to pay for Saddledome. And they pause our much needed hospital. How much more of this can we continue to take of this blatant disregard for Edmonton. Of course we get money here and there for projects, but we're totally being played.

It's ballooned to more than $600 million and construction is starting this year with completion of their Arts Barn and renovated Olympic Plaza completed by 2028-29. I think the funding is very secure.
Calgary apparently has billions in its rainy day fund and can afford major dollars for its downtown incentives, $1.2 billion for arena, $500 million for BMO and now $600+ million for this - they don't seem to be hurting for cash.

The accreditation checked comment goes back to the fundamental problem, which is it is still unclear about the relationship between AHS and the organization putting people in hotels.
It has been admitted there is a list or lists that AHS maintains to which they discharged patients to for accommodation, but LaGrange is claiming that being on such lists does not mean AHS has accredited them.
Those of us outside AHS don't know what organizations are on these lists, but I assume some of the places would be accredited care facilities. However, some seem not to be, so either someone at AHS did not realize this, did not care or did not properly explain this to the patients. And yes there also seems to be another issue of accommodation being provided by Contentment, not being what was intended, which should have been checked too.

I honestly think that, by the time the leadership vote comes, Nenshi will run unopposed. Like it or not, realistically, he's the best shot at ejecting the UCP and garnering enough strength to have a solid majority that will be able to pass some more challenging things in the Legislature.
