I think that’s primarily because they need to grade separate the CN rail crossing just north of highway 15. An interchange solves that problem. A problem that doesn't exist at the Yellowhead. But saying that, I would agree that there is a greater need for an interchange at Highway 16. That...
Yeah the section with a large median would have been a collectors/express system, and north of that would have just been a standard freeway. I’m assuming that Petro Can got built after the city abandoned the freeway plans and sold off excess land.
Because, just like Terwillegar, it was designed to be converted to a freeway in the future. The current roadway would become the collector roads, and the freeway built in the middle. Obviously that ship has most likely sailed at this point.
Even if grade separation is a priority, why does the LRT need to be the one elevated? Would it be cheaper (and make for easier transfers from the transit centre and Park n Ride) to keep the station at ground level and have Ellerslie Road pass above or below grade?
This one is pretty much complete. I think it’s one of the most underrated construction projects in Edmonton this year, just with the density it’s adding to an older neighbourhood one block from a school and two blocks from a major bus corridor. We need more projects like this in the inner city.
I was downtown today, and the trains were running at 5 minute frequencies! At one point, I could see two trains meeting at the Quarters stop, while a westbound was at Churchill and another was at 102 Street! It was really refreshing to see the line so busy. Here is a video showing some action...
Unfortunately the city has no say over where VIA puts their station. A lot of it is down to CN as it's their property. I don't think CN would ever allow a station to be built on the mainline near 127 Street as it's already a bottleneck for CN as trains enter and exit Walker yard.
I don't think that alignment would be ideal for a couple of reasons. First, it would require a sharp turn from CN's mainline to the Capital Line which would require Fort Rd and 66 Street to be realigned. Second, it would require passengers trains to navigate through Walker Yard, which is already...
I would rather keep the VIA station where it is for now and eventually relocate it further south on the old rail alignment, maybe terminating at 107 Ave instead. Long-term, I would love to see tracks continue into a tunnel under 105 Ave. and make their way to a downtown station, allowing...
London is being swallowed up by Toronto’s sphere of influence. It’s becoming more and more of a bedroom community for people looking for cheaper housing. I imagine WFH has really helped that. Just taking the 2 hour train into Toronto a couple of days a week.
The the thing that worries me the most about this project is that it will distract investors and the public from getting behind HSR… sure, this is a private enterprise, using private capital, but it is seen by some as a better alternative to an existing proven technology, and I fear in the end...
