I took a crack at a concept that would re-purpose the low level bridge into a pedestrian friendly edifice with the two southern lanes of the span converted to a pedestrian way with retail;/hospitality kiosks on the bridge deck. I would envision the entire bridge being encased in glass and refinished with a silver metallic paint (after rust-proofing). The two northern lanes would be repurposed to a Multiple Use Path with bidirectional bike lanes The Grierson Hill road would be restructured such that the northern lane would be a one-way uphill vehicular road paired with an MUP (two-lane bike path with a pedestrian side-lane). The big effort here would entail ridding the valley of the spaghetti tangle of roadways and making them work in a more sensible fashion -- I'm guessing traffic flow would actually be improved.
Some of the other features might include:
1. Turning a large section of the road entanglement into an English Country Garden --
English country gardens are known for their natural appearance and informal layout, but they can also include formal elements. Some features of an English country garden include:
- Hardscaping and formal hedging: These elements create a sense of order.
- Less formal planting borders: These borders provide a counterbalance to the formal elements.
- Perennial borders: These borders are full of flowers for three seasons and would include mass plantings of:
Peachleaf Bellflower (Campanula persicifolia)
Cottage Pinks (Dianthus plumarius)
Delphinium (genus), also known as wild larkspur
Hardy Geraniums (genus)
Hollyhocks (Alcea genus)
Japanese Anemone (Eriocapitella hupehensis,)
Lady's mantle (Alchemilla mollis)
Lavender (genus
- Ornamental pond and fountain: These features can be included in an English country garden and in this case would include a pond as a part of "daylighting" Mill Creek
- Statuary, containers, or other ornaments: These can be used to offset the garden plan.
- Lawns: English gardens often include gently rolling lawns and in furtherance of the bucolic setting we could entertain a small herd of babydoll sheep, fenced in with an undulating line of vertical stainless steel tubes, anchored in the ground and spaced at 6" on centre.(keeps the sheep in and coyotes out)
- Trees: English gardens often include groves of trees -- these could be Alberta Natives, both deciduous varieties and conifers.
- Picturesque architecture: English gardens can include recreations of classical temples, Gothic ruins, and bridges -- a Gothic ruin could be designed to house a sheep shed.
2. A world-class skateboard park with a weather-protected stage area and tiered amphitheater seating that has an adjustable translucent fabric roof. The backdrop for the seating area would be a vertically undulating two-sided planted wall, the south-facing featuring cold climate succulents and cacti including (with some photo examples); the north-facing wall would feature Alberta Native mosses and lichens including Letharia lupina, Mylia anomala, Sphagnum balticum, Sphagnum capillifolium, Shagnim fuscum and Warnstorfia fluitans. The south-facing wall background would be finished in a matte black (Trombe wall) to absorb sunlight heat in the winter -- I had great success growing the species listed on my south-facing garage wall in Edmonton.
Sempervivum "Red Lion"
Sempervivum "Mahogany"
Sempervivum calcareum
Sempervivum 'Cobweb" (Hens and Chicks)
Sedum "Golden Moss"
Sedum "Dragon's Blood"
Opuntia fragilis (Alberta Native Cactus)
Coryphantha vivipara (Alberta Native Cactus)
Rosularia platyphyla
Delosperma brunnthaleri
Moss Phlox (Phlox subulata)
3. Kiosks on the bridge deck (again, entire bridge structure encased in glass with operable roof sections to allow heat escape on hot summer days and awning wall sections to allow breezes to penetrate the space -- all operable remotely on temperature, humidity and wind sensors). The kiosks would be leased to food vendors (ethnic street-foods), sports-items vendors (kites, drones, skateboards, rollerblades, bicycle accessories, paddle boards, sunglasses, umbrellas and -- in winter -- ski accessories, snow-shoes, skis, and winter clothing accessories), and electronics vendors (cellphones and cell phone accessories, computer tablets, computer games and software, and tourist memorabilia. The view pods would feature seating and tables for view relaxation and eating areas.
