West Edmonton Mall

^ The Museum of Illusions looks to be going in that space. Picture taken yesterday. Lots of construction noise coming from within.

Development in the west end is largely happening in the Stony Plain Road PGA, and most people don't want to live next to the mall. It's far from being the Eiffel Tower. There are a lot of mid-rise buildings in Terra Losa and nearby, but can you imagine how awful your commute would be leaving a parking garage next to WEM?
There’s approximately 24,000 people who work at West Edmonton Mall whose commute wouldn’t entail leaving a parking garage if they could live there. With the transit station and soon to be completed LRT, they could give up their cars altogether and still enjoy pretty good access to the rest of the city.

Was at the mall today and noticed that Balenciaga shut down sometime recently. Surprising as I’ve heard from more than one source that the luxury stores at WEM were exceeding expectations.

"Exceeding expectations" generally still means losing a lot of money. Physical locations for ultra-luxury brands are usually meant to be used for brand promotion, not actual retail.

I don't think you can even buy a Rolex at GemOro, with the waitlist they have.

I'm not sure having a suburban mall as an upscale retail location works really so well, particularly as the mall is not located close to Edmonton's most upscale areas.

Being in the west end, it is also not easy to get to the mall from some other parts of the city. There is a reason in many other cities more upscale retail is more centrally located.

WEM is Edmonton's largest tourist attraction. When you're trying to sell to everyone and not just to locals, that's where you set up shop.

Yes, but around 1.5 million people live in the city which is a lot more than Grande Prairie or Fort Mac and they are much further away, so they may visit even less often than people on the other side of the city.

Looking into what is being said about the Mindbender replacement, it is suggested it will be a NERF-themed Vekoma launch coaster with an opening date by early 2027. It is speculated that it will offer a family mode and a thrill mode. In terms of technology, it is expected to be closest to the Abyssus roller coaster as shown in the video below but with a smaller footprint that overlaps itself many times.
