Valley Line LRT | TransEd/Marigold | City of Edmonton

The lower mainland has different considerations, just like we do. It also helps that they’re the only big metro area in BC rather than us with two, dividing both political and financial capital.

At the end of the day, I’m fine with the Valley Line as is, and it might be a bit unpopular but I’m okay with low floor systems and don’t think they’re a waste. For an overglorified tramway I think it’s done a good job of avoiding the pitfalls of North American trams like Ion or Portland Max. It’s got good routes, decent speed and more importantly it’s got that 5 min peak hour reliability.
Thats because its not a North American system, Its designed to more of a European standard.
 
The LRT will also be a catalyst for major residential development. Look at the towers being built downtown, university and other locations. Many of them are in close proximity to the LRT.
Poor Strathern, Although my hubby pointed out cut flags on the lot where Ralph’s was.
 
The fact that the Eglington Crosstown is not open yet is genuinely abysmal. Whatever the reasons or excuses are, the fact that the Valley Line was literally in the conceptual planning stage when that project began construction and is now almost fully done is just ridiculous. There's gotta be an audit of that project or something in the future no? 😭
Do you remember when people on C2E would post till their fingers bled about tunnelling and cut and cover? Going below grade has been one of the biggest boondoggles for the cross town line.

That is the problem with cross town it doesn’t know what it wants to be. A tram or a metro can’t be both

I would like to see all that single storey commercial gone along with the customer parking fronting 104Ave and replaced with 5+1 all along this stretch. Parking could still ve accomodated in the back. But this endless strip mall approach in our city centre needs to end. It's unbecoming to put it mildly..

Smaller lighter weight rolling stock definitely can be designed to be used in mixed traffic or designed to be a metro. What I am saying is the way it’s physically being build has been problematic. It was to be at grade like our low floor system.

It has been proven time and time again that tunnelling or cut and cover (to a lesser extent) creates delays. We can point to tunnel projects all over the world that share the same story be it Rail or Auto.

I will agree with you that Doug Ford’s political meddling created confusion and a quasi mixed tram/metro system (as you describe it), the only issue is he never fairly managed the publics expectations. We dont even know if the routes alignment was the best for underground work, all we know is that Ford declared the “War on Cars” was over and he made the whole thing political.

You would think we would collectively learn, but the general public has short memories.

Southside will likely happen eventually. North side I would be shocked to see much change for 20+ years. Outside of some of the corners of parking lots getting new residential, north side seems settled.

I have my issues with NJB but he's absolutely right on this, and it's why the Valley Line, despite all its shortcomings, is my favourite LRT line in the city.

Potentially more TOD coming along the Valley Line.

This would be right by Avonmore Station.
