Terwillegar Drive Expansion

Construction begins on new pedestrian bridge to enhance connectivity across Whitemud Drive
August 13, 2024

Construction has begun on a new pedestrian bridge as part of Stage Two of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion project. The 142 Street Pedestrian/Cyclist bridge will improve access and connectivity for walking, cycling, and rolling in southwest Edmonton and beyond.

The bridge, located across Whitemud Drive near 142 Street, will link the Brookside and Brookview neighbourhoods to existing active transportation routes. This includes the newly completed shared pathway built during Stage One of the expansion project.

“We are thrilled to announce the start of construction on the new 142 Street Pedestrian/Cyclist Bridge. Integrating active transportation modes has been a key focus of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion project and this long-awaited link will provide a safe connection for southwest residents,” said Councillor Tim Cartmell, “It’s exciting to see it all come together, and we extend our gratitude to the Alberta government for their support in making this happen.”

The 142 Street Pedestrian/Cyclist Bridge is a major component of a broader initiative to enhance pedestrian and active transportation infrastructure through the Terwillegar Drive Expansion project. Key upgrades include:
  • A new shared pathway along the east side of Terwillegar Drive, featuring community connections and improved lighting.
  • A dedicated pedestrian and cyclist bridge adjacent to the westbound Rainbow Valley Bridge, providing a safe pathway away from traffic.
  • Upgrades to the shared pathway from 122 Street to 142 Street.
  • A new pedestrian bridge as part of Stage Three, spanning Anthony Henday Drive between Terwillegar Drive and Rabbit Hill Road.

Sam El Mohtar, Director of Transportation Infrastructure Delivery will be available for scrum-style interviews onsite at 1:15 p.m. on August 13, 2024. To arrange an interview and for location details on August 13, please contact Nicole Boychuk.

My lord what an impact to traffic at times. It was backed up from Terwillegar to 106st heading westbound the other day.

I drove Terwillegar Drive today. I have no complaints except for the left exit onto the Whitemud - who came up with this dopey idea???

Back in concept planning there was this expensive looking interchange
