Stollery Children's Hospital

I imagine this will become yet another election issue, just like the Super Lab was last time. They will begin servicing the site in the hope that it will make it harder for any subsequent government to kill the project. The site that Ian links to makes so much more sense. The fact that that site was being considered makes this all the more concerning. I wonder what the City's involvement was, if any, on the planning side.

Municipalities are not directly involved in the actual planning. Alberta Infrastructure leads, and consults Alberta Health (well, it's successors), AHS/Covenant, and other stakeholders (i.e., the UofA, and the Stollery Foundation). Munis can be consulted on what their needs are, where they think a good location could be, etc., but they're treated like other stakeholders.

I realize that and didn't mean the direct planning. Planning includes consultation on location, as well as servicing requirements (City coordinates) and legal lot setup. Looking at edmonton maps, they are going to need to consolidate lots. I imagine we will see applications if they actually want to move on servicing next year. There is no public information available on applications on any of those lots at this time. Regardless, my comment was more about the part of the announcement to move quickly on servicing.

This site is a 5, 7, and 15 minute drive from the Southgate, Belgravia, and UofA LRT stations, respectively. It would be fairly easy to institute direct shuttles from a station to the new site with some route optimization to shave time.

I'm not convinced the thing will even get built, and while there are issues with the location, the catastrophization is a bit much.

So will this house that new $1Billion Cyclotron therapy cancer vault? When is that getting built?

Maybe if the Stollery Foundation raised $3b?

I had to look back on a post I made on the Stollery in March (in Alberta Government politics thread). A colleague I worked with at the time came from a high level position in administration at the Stollery. She said with certainty that the hospital won't be in operation for at least 10 years. Hope she's wrong.

The minister, though, said 5 to 8 years.

The only silver lining I see with the location chosen is that it may encourage the city to look at planning a SW extension of the Metro Line. But yeah, the obvious spot was the location Ian posted…

And for the record, every time I have had to visit the Stollery with my kids, we took the LRT. At the new location, I will be forced to drive and find parking. So stupid.

I agree in that it would be great to see the LRT extended Southwest and past a new Stollery location. But I do say that the location where Blood Services was located would have been first choice for me and second choice would have been at the greenfield area where super lab was to be built. Now option 3 wouldn't be ideal but my third choice would be where they were to build the hospital south of Ellerslie along the LRT Line. It is pretty far but at least it would have been connected to the LRT and of course that would have sparked further expansion on the LRT Line south hopefully to 41st Ave and eventually to the airport.

A lot can happen in 8 to 10 years. I do feel this will be built eventually but in a different/better location.

Any chance the existing Canada Blood Services building could be used/converted for additional capacity at the UofA Hospital?

A win-win might look like expansion of the University hospital and locating the Stollery Children's Hospital on the south campus along with additional research facilities focused on childhood genetics diseases, brain research vis-a-vis societal dislocation, and study in the realm of autism which seems to be a more prevalent concern in modern day medicine. If the Stollery group is close to being self-funded it might also be able to swing some political clout no matter who has the Provincial reins to effectively put itself in destiny control related to medical treatments across the board for the Edmonton area.

Kaye Clinic was supposed to get the Nuero expansion but that was cut by the GoA. There is still most of the top floor undeveloped. Kaye is the extension of the U hospital. Adding ped ways would at least make the Blood Service a bit more user friendly for the U expansion. But it would be cheaper to knock it down and rebuild. There is quite limited structure in the Blood services building.
