Those who grew up in Edmonton may remember the Sahara club on the northwest corner of 114 Avenue and Groat Road (where the gas station and convenience store are now). My parents actually held their wedding reception there. There was a twin cinema (Famous Players) attached. When Westmount Centre mall renovated in 1985, Famous Players moved into a four-plex theatre on the second level of the mall (it still exists--the escalator to it is in front of the Safeway mall entrance). The freestanding Sahara/theatre building was then demolished.
For years a mosaic from the old Sahara was preserved on a pedestal inside Westmount mall, right outside the entrance to the old Woodward's Food Floor/Safeway. Safeway subsequently moved to the south end of the mall and the old food floor was demolished to make way for Home Depot.
Does anyone know what happened to the old Sahara mosaic?
