Municipal Politics

Write to those wayward councillors.

Make sure they understand they just made a big mistake.

Very poor timing on their part.
Not every councillor needs to champion every cause. The 2010s performative cancel culture is over, let’s move on.

Please remember that Muslims, Christians, Jews, and many other worldviews and cultures don’t see the current western secular approach to gender transitioning as caring or scientific (not to mention the many others who hold that view while still being western secularists too).

There’s a difference between “hate” and not actively advocating for something. I don’t assume a councillor hates a certain people group if they’re not at every key celebration of those people. Intolerant progressivism needs to return to its origins of tolerance and respect.

We can't afford to tolerate intolerance any longer when trans kids are committing suicide in this province.
I agree with that statement, but I also agree with @thommyjo in the sense that there is a big difference in hatred and non-support.
Expect people who have a certain set of beliefs and moral code to support something that goes so hard against those is unreasonable. I would be concerned if, on top of not being present at the proclamation, they had gone on social media or something like that, and made a bunch of hateful comments and denounced the proclamation, etc. Not the case.
Does that mean I agree with these people's views? No, but we definitely have to respect their right of not supporting something. Not supporting something isn't intolerance.

Incredibly tone deaf to not attend though, especially with the NWC decisions the provincial government is doing. Small things like this are easy to do and a small win for you as a council member for good public relations too.

Did you look into where the other councillors were at the time?

Fair point, considering the orientation, but isn't Jon Morgan in there as well?
Knack and Morgan were the sole attendees at the RARICANOW drag show for trans remembrance, that does not mean that Janz hates drag queens.

Wright wasn't at the Metis Week Commemorative Ceremony earlier this week, that does not mean that Wright hates indigenous culture.

This whole conversation is absurd. Council is stretched thin, expect some people to be missing from some photo ops.

There’s always another worthy cause. Every war people need to be “educated” on is just one of many. Each cause is one of many.

Doesn’t mean those causes don’t matter. I’m glad people are advocating for stuff they care about. But the self righteousness to think you care about all the right things and others not caring about the exact same stuff makes them morally inferior is dumb.

Give money. Volunteer. Care for people. “Speak up” if you think it matters and is effective (although speaking up is often the extent of what many do who claim to care, never actually sacrificing finances or significant time to love others).

But stop the self righteous judging.

I wouldn't fault anyone individually for not being there for this photo, but the pattern of who showed up and who didn't is striking.

Mainly just Principe so far, given Parmar, Clarke and Elliott just started on Council (though Elliott does have a bit of a past...). We will see if how closely (or not) that group aligns with each other over the next few Council meetings.
