The Alberta Tenancy Act is in need of keeping up with its competition. While it is a considerable cost to developers, the Ont and BC Acts are far more fair and substantial in nature, with considerable consideration for displacement of these types of units.

I take it it sold? I recall it being up for sale a while back and found the article:

I actually house-sat for the owners, a University of Alberta Professor and his wife, who had a 6-month sabbatical that put him at a university in Texas back in the '80s -- memory reload. It was at the same time that I owned and operated the Roman Pub in South Edmonton. The house itself was deceptively large and had a beautiful library inside -- tremendous River Valley views!

Dunno if anyone cares but I updated Edmonton's Wikipedia page for its tallest buildings last week! I found it lacking and missing a few new buildings so I updated it and also wrote a history section–and added a map. Lemme know if the history is wrong or missing anything. Check it out

Not sure if anyone has posted this already, but the old funeral home at 108 St and 102 Ave seems to now be owned by Maclab and they may be doing student housing.

The same folks that brought us Eleanor and Laurent towers adjacent to U of A campus. They are also partners in the Parks towers (Tower 1 recently completed). This could be another architectural gem.

^ Potentially due to the use of embalming fluid that contained formaldehyde (rigorous testing would determine if that is the case) -- also the building is of an age where there would almost certainly be asbestos remediation required.

If there was significant formaldehyde discharge over the years, potentially. Environmental Site Assessment will determine what level of remediation is required though. Could be on the easier side, could also be soil contamination.

Formaldehyde in soil quickly breaks down and is not generally a concern except for constant and excessive discharge from a polluting source. It is highly unlikely that the mortuary would have had polluting levels of embalming fluid discharging into site soil -- it can be quickly tested leading to a reasonable outcome in terms of remediation.

Sad to see this go. All drywall been removed - down to studs. Wish they could just start over now but I guess was never feasible?
