Spruce Grove envisions $79M sport and event centre
Residents of Spruce Grove will get a look next month at plans for a $79-million multi-use sport and event centre that would be the largest development in the city's history.

A proposal to develop the Westwind Centre on a parcel of land south of the Yellowhead Highway and east of Century Road was brought forward to Spruce Grove city council Monday.

The next steps will be sharing the concept with the community, the city said in a news release.

Liquor board approves new Edmonton-area horse racing facility
A proposed new horse racing facility near the Edmonton International Airport has been approved by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.

Century Casinos Inc. was chosen last September by Horse Racing Alberta to own and operate Century Mile, a one-mile horse racetrack with barns and a multi-level entertainment centre, according to a company news release Monday.

The centre will include a gaming floor that will initially have 550 slot machines, an off-track betting area, food and beverage outlets, indoor and outdoor viewing areas, and a grandstand.

The project, located between the airport and the RedTail Landing golf course, is expected to cost $50 million and take about 15 months to build once Century Casinos receives development and other permits.

Century Mile horse racing track near Edmonton airport gets AGLC approval
A new horse racing track in Leduc County has received approval from the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission.

The $50-million Century Mile Entertainment Centre will have a track, grandstand, slot machines, off-track betting and food and beverage outlets.

Paul Ryneveld, general manager of the Century Downs track near Calgary also operated by Century Casinos which will operate the new Edmonton track, said construction is expected to start this spring, with an opening in late summer 2018.

Spruce Grove considering building $79-million sports and entertainment centre
The City of Spruce Grove is considering building a $79-million sports and event centre it says will be part of the largest development in the community’s history.

The site would feature two ice surfaces, one with seating for up to 5,300 people and private suites, and a second community pad providing room for up to 200 spectators.

The facility is also intended to host a variety of events, including sports tournaments, trade shows, craft fairs, conferences, concerts, graduations, memorials and award ceremonies, the city says in a news release.

It would be part of the Westwind development, a planned commercial, hospitality and entertainment project on 50 hectares of land the city assembled in 2008 at Yellowhead Highway and Century Road.

Westwind would be Spruce Grove’s largest development, featuring stores, offices, hotels, restaurants, housing, a transit park-and-ride as well as the sports centre.

Construction on new Misericordia ER to begin in 2018: province
Health Minister Sarah Hoffman released new details, including a timeline, for the Misericordia Hospital’s new emergency room on Monday.

It was revealed in the budget that the ailing Misericordia Hospital would be getting a new emergency department to the tune of $65 million dollars.

Hoffman said the money is being invested over four years, and construction on the new department is slated to begin by late 2018.

$65M for Misericordia Hospital will include new emergency department
In the Alberta government’s 2017 budget, the NDP announced $65 million over four years for upgrades to Edmonton’s Misericordia Hospital. On Monday, the province said that modernization project includes a new emergency department.

“Funding for a new emergency department is a major step forward towards a modern, vibrant Misericordia that meets the needs of the communities in west Edmonton and beyond for generations to come,” said Patrick Dumelie, Covenant Health president and CEO.
During the 2015-2016 year, the Misericordia saw 51,214 visits to its emergency department; more than double the volume it was designed to accommodate.

The current ER was built in 1969 and it was renovated in 1989.

“The Mis emergency department is the closest hospital for some of Edmonton’s most socio-economically challenged neighbourhoods,” said Tana Fish, program manager of emergency services. “Seniors and people with mental illness represent a large portion of people who come through our doors each day.

New housing announced for Edmontonians in need
A new supportive living facility in The Quarters will house 97 Edmontonians experiencing chronic mental health concerns, brain injuries or mobility issues.

The Edmonton People in Need Shelter Society broke ground on the $14.3-million facility Tuesday, and clients who are set to live in the new building by September 2018 are already eager to move in.

“It should be nice. Air conditioning in every room. Bigger rooms, they said about three times as big as our current ones,” said Thomas Douglas.

“I will be able to exercise any time I want.”

The new building will have a gym, an elevator, a state-of-the-art kitchen and other supports that can’t be offered at Douglas’ current space in Batoma House.

It will also provide meals, personal care, nursing care, and recreational and social programming for residents.

New 97-unit supportive living home breaks ground in the Quarters
A new 97-unit supportive living facility for individuals with chronic mental illness, brain injuries and mobility issues in Edmonton’s inner-city is “the solution, not the problem.”

Speaking at the ground-breaking for the new facility in The Quarters on Tuesday, Mayor Don Iveson asked area residents in attendance to help make the case for why the city needs more housing projects.

“We haven’t gotten to the finish line of our 10-year plan to end homelessness. We’ve still got about 1,100 people with serious needs who require housing like this,” Iveson said.

The new facility on 103A Avenue across from Boyle Street Plaza will provide permanent housing in private suites for individuals with varying needs. Run by the Edmonton People in Need Shelter Society, on-site staff will provide health-care services, bathing and personal care, meals, and recreational and social programming for residents.
