Edmonton is beginning to have several "big city" nodes growing into prominence -- 1. downtown, centred on the Ice District and the Arts District to the east of City Hall; 2. the Oliver District with a developing 124th street and a new focal point that I would pinpoint as the redeveloped and repurposed Oliver Exchange; 3. the Provincial Government node that also includes Grandin; 4. the MacEwan/NorQuest Universities node that, as it expands, will be largely responsible for the projected growth of west downtown; 5. the university of Alberta node (noted here); 6. Commonwealth node and 7. the Old Strathcona node. And... there are more to come (they are in their infancy -- 8. NAIT/Blatchford Field; 9. Alberta Avenue; and 10. Rossdale.
Supporting the growth are:
for node 1: Ice District Phase II; Qualico's Stationlands; the Quarters; and untold others
for node 2: Myriad high-rise projects along and north and south of Jasper Avenue; the strengthening of Retail/Hospitality along 124th Street; and untold others
for node 3: when UPC is sidelined, a re-mandating Provincial Government growth; and untold others
for node 4: already planned expansion of both downtown Universities; the warehouse district park; exceptionally large mixed use developments; and untold others
for node 5: U of A expansion; Garneau mixed use developments; and untold others
for node 6: mixed use and Condo developments already underway; upgraded Commonwealth Stadium; and untold others
for node 7: the "Hat" project; a new groceteria; the City street conversions; and untold others
for node 8: NAIT expansion; the expansion of Blatchford; and untold others
for node 9: The development of Northlands; the expansion of Concordia University; and untold others
for node 10: a World Indigenous Peoples' Exposition; and untold others.
Amen! Exciting days ahead for Edmonton!!!
