They can try. From the plexiglass website:

  • PLEXIGLAS® is classified as B2, normal flammability, without burning droplets.

  • PLEXIGLAS® is used in public areas such as in kindergartens and schools.
  • PLEXIGLAS® has been approved for decades by the aviation industry for use in window glazing.
  • PLEXIGLAS® is also tested in accordance with US standard ASTM D 635-81
Broken glass shards are dangerous, but plexiglass is inherently a pretty safe material. No shatter, low burn risk, and great thermal resistance. It is a bit uglier than real glass, but I think it's a fair tradeoff.

Initially thought this sounded like a useless grant project, but it allows for real-time navigation of multi-level areas for EPS in transit systems. For example, a top-down map might have a marker but it doesn't reflect that it's 2-3 levels below grade, and this project would allow for faster response times by directing EPS straight to specific locations. Also allows for officers to report their locations more accurately.

Good news! This work happened a few weeks ago... I just forgot about it until I was on the platform today. All of the wood is gone, and broken glass replaced, sort of.

Being up close today, I realized that they hadn't replaced the top portion, and that the the bottom portion that a was replaced wasn't glass. It is Plexiglass, or something like that. I believe I still did see 1 broken pane.

Our transit is not built for our climate. We should have enclosed stations, platform screen doors, heated bus transit centres, etc. this is another step in the wrong direction.

Another hidden cost of social disorder for all those that like to claim housing is cheaper than jail. Sure, if they go into housing and stop all their shenanigans. But the multitude of impacts that are never counted in that equation, like this, make me happy to pay for prison sentences to keep criminals off the streets and to protect those needing supports and housing from the crimes of the bad apples.

Transit centres are heated, and ETS continually does a better job with heating which each new transit centre. Enclosed stations, and platform screen doors are going to be a huge expense.
I suspect that the missing upper glazing is temporary.

The valley line isn’t heated. Many bus stations only have small buildings that can’t hold most people waiting. For the handful of downtown stations/uni, platform doors would be nice and would save on heating bills.

Just sucks to see the REM and realize that’s exactly what Edmonton needed. Instead we got the Portland streetcar with a 25 degree colder climate.
